  • Ouster suit filed against constable

    Roane County Constable Mark Patton could soon find himself out of office. An ouster suit was filed against him in Roane County Circuit Court on Tuesday.

    Patton, who was elected as constable for the 6th District in August 2006, has been accused of using his police powers to harass residents and law enforcement officers.

  • Obama presidency inspires community

    A sense of pride and hope overwhelmed the auditorium at Harriman’s Jamieson Community Center Tuesday.

    The building — once the home of a segregated Roane County school — was now filled with people celebrating the inauguration of President Barack Obama, the nation’s first African-American president.

  • Judge to soon make decision on status of Houston brothers' cases

    A jury returned eight unanimous not-guilty verdicts when Rocky Houston was tried in December.

    Those verdicts should be null and void, according to special prosecutor Kenneth Irvine.

    He insists the verdicts were the result of Special Judge James “Buddy” Scott giving incorrect instructions to the jury. Irvine told Scott that to his face during a hearing Wednesday afternoon.

  • Swan Pond may be part of Harriman

    Despite the TVA fly ash spill, Swan Pond property remains popular with one group — the Harriman City Council.

    The possibility of expanding the city limits to add the Emory Heights area and Swan Pond came up during the city council workshop this week.

    Harriman Councilman Ken Mynatt brought detailed maps to the workshop and proposed taking a look at annexing those communities.

  • Investigation still open on Casey Road shooting

    Tuesday’s fatal shooting on Casey Road was still an open investigation late this week.

    Roane County Sheriff Jack Stockton said Steven Dishman died from a single shot to the chest.

    The shooter, Donald Goldberg, told authorities Dishman left him with no choice.

  • Hampton hearing set

    Daniel Glenn Hampton, a former Roane County resident charged with killing his wife, will appear in U.S. District Court Monday for a pretrial hearing on drug and weapons charges.

    A trial date has been set for Feb. 9, but that may change if the court approves the prosecution’s motion to continue on Monday.

  • Hampton drug trial delayed until May 11

    A U.S. District Court magistrate on Monday delayed the drug trial for Daniel Glenn Hampton and two co-defendants for three more months.

    The trial, which was scheduled to start Feb. 9, has been postponed until May 11.

  • Blame snow for Houston no-show

    Rocky and Leon Houston aren’t free yet.

    A hearing to discuss the conditions of bond release for the brothers was postponed until Monday, Feb. 9.

    Special Judge James “Buddy” Scott wasn’t sure the Roane County Courthouse was going to be open on Tuesday because Roane County schools were closed.

  • Harriman Public Library: 100 years and counting

    A century ago, a passionate group of women petitioned for a public library in Harriman.

    Now a new group of impassioned people are holding festivities throughout the year to recognize the milestone.

    Harriman Public Library officially began its 100-year celebration during an open house Jan. 31.

    The historic Carnegie Foundation library was founded thanks to women who originally started out as a literary group, then decided to work together to bring a library to the community.

  • TVA purchased 19 spill-affected properties so far

    TVA is following through with its plan to buy up property in the ash spill area.

    Through Tuesday of this week, the utility company had purchased 19 pieces of property, according to the Roane County Property Assessor's Office.

    What's being paid for those properties is a mystery. TVA is having the sellers sign confidentiality agreements.

    “That's the legal protocol that we're following,” TVA spokesman Gil Francis said.
