  • Roane State’s Goff to speak on military service

    Roane State President Gary Goff will discuss his military career at a forum presented by the college’s Social Science, Business and Education Division.
    The forum will be held on Wednesday, May 2 at the Oak Ridge campus in room C-104 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public.
    Goff served as an infantry captain through two tours of combat duty during the Vietnam War.

  • The Garden Gate: Plant your stake today, land optional

    For the dedicated gardener anywhere, the likely spot to plant something and anything is a container.

    It is not necessary to have an acre of land to have a garden. You can have a garden in a flowerpot.

    For millions of people, even a small plot of land is not available. There are those who live in apartments, people who live on houseboats, people whose occupations keep them on the road in campers or mobile homes, so container gardening is the perfect answer.

    As a matter of fact, the size of our gardens in general is shrinking.

  • Letter carriers collecting to Stamp Out Hunger

    Letter carriers in Harriman, Kingston and Rockwood are joining in the 20th annual National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger food drive on May 12.

    On that day, letter carriers from those Roane County post offices will join their colleagues from across the nation as they collect nonperishable food donations from homes as they deliver mail along their postal routes.

    Shannon Summer Calloway of Kingston was the 1987 Roane County Poster child for the March of Dimes. The 4-year-old with a perpetual smile is fed through a tube in her stomach and can’t sit up or roll over on her own, although she tries. She was diagnosed with water on the brain and cerebral palsy and has motor skills of a 6- or 7-month old. Her mother, Lisa, thinks Shannon is intelligent.  “Maybe the Lord gave her to me as a gift,” Lisa said.

  • Shriners aim to help kids at Saturday’s mini-clinic

    Kerbela Shrine Temple, Knoxville, will have its annual free mini-clinic this weekend.

    The clinic will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 28 in Kerbela Shrine Temple at 315 Mimosa Ave. Call 573-1901 for details.

    The screening helps identify children who can benefit from orthopedic and burn care at Shriners Hospitals for Children.

  • Rockwood Clothes Closet needs help so it can help

    The Rockwood Clothes Closet in Rockwood, a Christian nonprofit charity that helps the needy with free clothing, furniture, household goods and food as available, is in need of assistance from the public.

    One of the biggest needs is furniture of all kinds, including beds, couches and chairs, tables and chairs, good clean mattresses.

    Other household donations that would be appreciated include pots and pans, dishes, towels and washcloths, sheets, pillow cases, quilts and blankets, baby beds and clothing, small appliances and silverware.

  • Kindergarten, pre-K sign-ups planned three days next week

    Roane County Schools will have kindergarten and prekindergarten registration next week.

    Parents should register students for the 2012-13 school year at the school in their district.

    Registration will take place at the elementary schools from noon to 4 p.m. April 30, from 3 to 6 p.m. May 1, and from 7:30 to 11 a.m. May 2.

    Kindergarten students must be 5 on or before Sept. 30; Pre-K students must be 4 on or before Sept. 30.
