  • Hear about marvels of ham radio during Field Day event

    Amateur radio operators in Roane County will join “hams” from all across the country in a public demonstration of emergency communications during National Amateur Radio Field Day.

    The special weekend of events will be on June 25-26 at Fort Southwest Point, Kingston. The 24-hour demonstration will be from 2 p.m. Saturday until 2 p.m. Sunday.

    This annual Field Day event is the climax of American Radio Relay League’s Amateur Radio Week.

  • The Garden Gate: Yucca both beautiful in the garden and yummy on the plate

    Summer gardens are so often a blaze of color — even at the very beginning of summer, when everything seems to come to flower at once — that the lovely big towering stalks of yucca seem to strike a cooling note with their white cascades of blossom.

    Yuccas have many aliases derived from the various countries where they may be found. These include Spanish bayonet, desert candle, Adam’s needle, manihot and Cassavasor manioc.

  • Nevils-Houston

    Douglas and Patricia Pate of Murfreesboro and Phillip and Gayle Nevils of Nashville announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Nikki Elaine Nevils, to Landon Wayne Houston.

    He is the son of Michael B. Houston of Crossville and Sally Houston of Kingston.

    The ceremony will be on July 9 in Antioch United Methodist Church. A reception will follow in Marathon Village in Nashville.

    The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Betty Sue Rice of Nashville and the late Boyd Rice, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Nevils.

  • Poe-Voiles

    Mr. and Mrs. Michael Binkley and Rodney Poe of Arkansas announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter, McKenzie Renee Poe, to Chad Edward Voiles of Rockwood.

    He is the son of Don and Vicki Voiles of Rockwood.

    The ceremony will be on July 9 in Arkansas.

  • Mr. & Mrs. de Abiega

    Lee Ann Richards and Ricardo de Abiega were married on April 23 at Liberty State Park.

    The Rev. Paul Mayer officiated during the evening ceremony.

    The bride is the daughter of Mike and Anne Richards of Spring City.

    Her grandparents are the late Marjorie and Richard Chamberlain, and the late Loraine and Herbert Richards.

    The groom is the son of Teresa Quintano and the late Enrique de Abiega.

    Addison Grace Richards served as flower girl.

    Kingston’s Don Colyer and Earl “Lucky” Leasure   built an exact replica of the old Roane County Courthouse as it would have looked in the 1850s. The half-inch scale model was something Colyer wanted people to remember the old courthouse by. Funded by the Roane County Heritage Commission, it took over a year to complete.

  • Wear purple to build awareness for elder abuse

    Since 2006, when purple was chosen as the “awareness color” for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Tennessee has played its part in “lighting the way” to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of elderly and vulnerable adults.

    This year is no exception.

  • Medic plans 3 blood drives

    Medic Regional Blood Center asks all eligible donors to make a donation this summer.

    “Donations are down this time of year; yet, the need is great due to the increase traffic and recreation in our area,” said Christi Fightmaster, Medic spokeswoman.

    Donors will have three chances in the upcoming weeks to give blood in Roane County.

    A Medic mobile unit will be at Oliver Springs Food City from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 21 for a blood drive.

  • Planters primp up downtown area

    Rockwood 2000 members, from left, Sue Hill, Mary Kau, Molly Rogers and Sue McCutcheon install and plant one of 15 “trough planters” as one of the organization’s beautification projects in the city’s downtown area.

    Rockwood 2000 is also working on additional landscaping projects on Gateway Avenue.
