  • Rockwood recruits Stroh for industry

    The city of Rockwood is hoping the addition of a new member to their team will be able to encourage industry to their area.

    The new jobholder is a familiar face across Roane County.

    The city council approved the hiring of Beverly Stroh to the newly added position of industrial recruiter.

    Stroh currently works for The Roane Alliance as the manager of tourism and marketing.

    And the hope of city officials is that she will do the same, only concentrating on Rockwood.

  • 3 run unopposed for school board

    While some of his counterparts will be out campaigning hard this summer, Rockwood school board member Mike “Brillo” Miller can take it easy with the politicking.

    A candidate can do that when he doesn’t have an opponent.

    Miller is running unopposed in District 1.

    “I’m glad,” Miller said. “I’d rather not have to go out and beat on doors this summer.”

  • Davis expresses concern about school budget, staffing

    Director of Schools Mike Davis has a balanced budget ready to present to the county budget committee, but expressed concern that it may not be realistic.

    Davis warned members of the Morgan County Board of Education that the budget proposed for 2008-09 worries him. Davis expects the budget to fall short in some areas including transportation which includes fuel and perhaps even in text books.

  • Early Voting to begin for August election

    Voters will soon begin to cast their ballots in the August General Election. Early voting will begin on Friday, July 18.

    Election Day will be Thursday, Aug. 7.

    Races on the August ballot include:

    Biff Wilson, who was appointed by county commissioners to fill the unexpired term of his late wife Susie Kittrell Wilson, is running unopposed for Morgan County Assessor of Property.

  • A string-filled night of Bradbury magic

    Pondside, on a clear summer evening in East Roane County, a lone frog warms up his banjo vocal chords as the sun goes down.

    At a renovated schoolhouse across the road comes a faint reply — but this one includes guitars, mandolin and bass.

    It’s Tuesday night at the Bradbury Community Center at 3343 Buttermilk Road and the place is hopping with Bluegrass players and those who like to hear them play.

  • Massengill, Rose square off for school board seat

    Two men want what’s best for the schools located South of the River.

    The voters from that area will have to decide which one can best make that happen.

    Long-time school board member Everett Massengill is being challenged for his District 7 seat by newcomer Howie Rose.

    The district includes the three Midway schools.

    “I’ve never run for anything before,” Rose said. “It’s really been a learning experience.”

  • Efforts to keep records private may be too late

    Property Assessor Teresa Kirkham’s fight to keep certain portions of her cell phone bills private might be too late.

    Steven Robinette, Kirkham’s opponent in the August election, wants to see the call detail records of her cell phone bills and won the right to do so in court.

    Now Kirkham has taken further steps to block the records, but they’ve already been turned over.

  • Good news, bad news for Kingston

    It was a good news, bad news two days on Tuesday and Wednesday for the Kingston AAA All-Stars in the Dixie Youth District 8 AAA Tournament in Rockwood.

    The bad news was the Jackets had to play Madisonville on both days and the results were a pair of losses for the Jackets.

    On Tuesday, Kingston gave the Tornadoes all they wanted before dropping a 2-0 decision. On Wednesday, however, Madisonville was in complete control as they rolled to a 13-2 victory in the tournament's championship game.

  • Harriman rolls over Madisonville, 14-3

    The Harriman Major All-Stars are heading back to the Dixie Youth State Tournament.

    The Blue Devils secured their tournament berth Monday night in Madisonville with a 14-3 victory over Rockwood.

    The Tigers also entered Monday’s contest with a shot at earning a spot in the state tournament that begins on Monday, July 14 in Chattanooga, but the Tigers were eliminated from postseason play with the loss.

  • Some boaters undeterred by gas prices

    Drew Neklason is quick with the math these days.

    “At $4 a gallon with a 21-gallon tank, it’s 80-something bucks,” Neklason said.

    Neklason is referring to the cost to fill up his boat.

    An avid boater, Neklason isn’t letting the high price of filling up stop him from taking advantage of the beautiful waterways that run through Roane County.

    He said he’s still taking his boat out and enjoying everything the water has to offer.
