  • Kingston hands loss to Greenback

    Armed with timely hitting and exceptional pitching, the Kingston Yellow Jackets buzzed past the Greenback Cherokees in 11- to 12-year-old Dixie Youth League state tournament action.

    Both teams left runners on second base in the first inning. Kingston scored its first run at the bottom of the second on a balk by the Greenback pitcher, followed by RBI singles by Benji Headrick and Jadon Hensley and an RBI off an error to take a 4-0 advantage.

  • Jackets drop one to Tellico

    In just one day’s time, the Kingston Yellow Jackets went from the thrill of victory to the agony of defeat.

    The Jackets left 11 men on base as they dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to the Tellico Plains Bears in Dixie Youth Baseball 11- to 12-year-old action.

    Neither team put runs on the board for the first inning.

    Kingston left runners on the corners in the top of the second inning as Tellico Plains scored on an RBI single by Cody Swanson, but left the bases juiced to take a 1-0 lead.

  • Tigers downed by Madisonville dominance

    Domination would describe the matchup between Rockwood and Madisonville.

    The Tornadoes ripped through Rockwood 13-0 Friday night.

    Madisonville scored in the top of the first off a Tanner Moser blast that went a good 275 feet.

    It was all downhill from there for the Tigers.

    Austin Ford and Josh Sloan batted in Tornado singles at the top of the second, with J.D. Wiggins hitting in a double and Nick Herrill stealing home for a 5-0 lead.

  • Upward Flag football signups next 2 Saturdays

    Upward flag football signups will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 16 and July 23 at the Roane State Community College field.

    Signups are for ages 4 through eighth grade.

  • SOR Fun Run set for July 30

    The South of the River Fun Run will start at 8 a.m. July 30 at Midway High School.

    The fun run will feature a certified 5K run, kids mile and 2-mile walk.

    All proceeds benefit the Midway High School football and basketball programs.

    The fun run is part of Family Fun Day with activities, games and food from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

  • Oak Ridgers, Harriman leaders oppose tax hike

    An Oak Ridge resident with a home appraised at $100,000 will pay an additional $16.23 in taxes if a property tax rate increase is approved by the Roane County Commission.  

    “The people that I’ve talked to don’t feel that we get our money’s worth in services,” Commissioner Steve Kelley said.

    “The people in the Oak Ridge portion of Roane County do all their business in Oak Ridge.”

  • Water-rate decision may come Friday

    The 30-percent water-rate increases talked about for Rockwood customers will go into effect Aug. 1 if a resolution is approved at special-called meetings this week.

    Rockwood Water, Sewer and Gas Board will meet in special-called session at 7 p.m. today, July 11, to discuss approval of the rate increase and the 2011-12 budget.

    Rockwood City Council has scheduled a special-called meeting for 4 p.m. July 15 for the same purpose.
