  • Babahatchie Band to perform free concert

    Babahatchie Community Band will perform in its final indoor concert of the season at 3 p.m. April 10 in Harriman High School auditorium.

    The concert, featuring movie scores, will be rich in contemporary music that will likely be listened to hundreds of years from now.

    The band will perform the scores from “The Lion King,” “Dances with Wolves,” “Titanic,” “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and “Beauty and the Beast.”

    Admission is free.

  • Student Government Day trains future leaders

    Roane County Executive Ron Woody has designated April 21 as Student Government Day 2011.

    The annual event gives public high school students in Roane County an opportunity to spend time with officials they were selected to represent.

    “This event is a great opportunity for our students to see their county government at work,” Woody said. “We must create interest in our government in order to stimulate the next generation of leadership for our county.”

  • DAR honors ’11 Good Citizens

    Avery Trace Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, recently presented its 2010-11 Good Citizens honor to four high school students in Roane County.

    This year’s recipients are:

    Harriman High — Emily  Kaitlin Crabtree, daughter of Tim and Kim Crabtree.

    Midway High — Taylor Shannon Narramore, daughter of Barry and April Narramore.

  • Juniors explore options during Career Day

    More than 550 juniors from all five Roane County high schools will take part in a Career Exploration Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m today, April 8, at Roane State Community College.

    Students will be professionally dressed and prepared with résumés, notepads and questions for representatives from 49 different businesses to talk about their futures.

    This is the third year for the joint effort between Roane County Chamber of Commerce’s Education Affairs Committee and Roane County Schools.

  • DISASTER! Students hone skills during drill

    More than 100 students from Harriman, Oliver Springs and Roane County high schools played victims or medical personnel during a disaster drill last week on the Harriman High School football field.

    “This is one event that is looked forward to each year by all health science students,” said instructor Ronna Carlton, who serves as director of the event.

    The scenario for this year’s drill involved a train derailment that hit a school bus and rolled into a daycare center.
