  • Work searches required for unemployment

    Beginning Sept. 1, the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development will implement the Unemployment Insurance Accountability Act of 2012.

    The act requires all unemployment claimants in Tennessee to demonstrate valid work search activity and maintain a work search log.

    Failure to comply with the new law will result in a loss of benefits.

    Notices are being mailed to all claimants receiving Tennessee Unemployment Compensation informing them of the new requirements to continue receiving benefits.

  • Don’t let business startup tax you

    The IRS has some basic federal tax information and matters of consideration for individuals planning to open a business. They include:
    • Type of business. The most common types of businesses are sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, S corporation and limited liability company. The type of business determines which tax forms to file.
    • Types of taxes. The four general types of business taxes are income, self-employment, employment and excise tax.

  • Ten Mile’s safe letter carriers

     

    U.S. Postal Service rural letter carriers at the Ten Mile post office who recently received National Safety Council Safe Driver Awards for their commitment to safety and defensive driving are, from left, Kathy Lawson, Scott Klecha, Tresa Lee, Barb Evans and officer in charge Shirley Goolesby. The honored letter carriers represent a combined 53 years of accident-free driving while serving the Postal Service and their customers. Evans also received a commendation for her service and dedication throughout her career, which began in 1984.

  • Miles among employees promoted at Citizens Bank

    Cassandra Miles, a former teller at Citizens National Bank’s Kingston office, has been promoted to banking officer at the Oak Ridge office.

    Miles’ promotion was among those recently announced by Citizens National Bank President Jack B. Allen.

    Miles has been with Citizens National Bank for nine years and was a teller at the Kingston office for eight and a half years before transferring to the Oak Ridge branch.

  • OUT to LUNCH: Excellent food, scenery will draw you to Caramella

    If you were in the area in 1960, you may remember seeing Larry and Tway Oran building a small concrete structure at the entrance of Kingston City Park, next door to the white, two-story Oran family home.

    Their mother operated Lakeside Grill in the building for a short time. Over the years, several other businesses have occupied the building, most recently the Blue Moon café.

    In February 2011, Hungarian chef Andras Bartha began adding the foundation for a sidewalk bistro to the building.

    The Kingston yellow Jackets used a timely passing game in the first half and a balanced rushing attack to beat the Scott Highlanders, 35-6, last Friday night at Kingston’s Dr. Nat Sugarman Memorial Field.

  • Bobcats slam Eagles, 62-6

    After just scoring seven points in their first two games, the Oliver Springs Bobcats roared to life Friday night with a 62-6 victory over Oakdale on homecoming at D.J. Brittan Field.

    “We played well tonight,” Oliver Springs head coach Wiley Brackett said. “We started quick on offense then our defense was able to come up with a lot of turnovers. This is a good win for us after a tough first couple of games.”

    Oliver Springs fast start was almost hard to believe as the Bobcats scored 55 points in the first half alone.

    • Rockwood First Presbyterian Church will have an open house and neighborhood block party from 5 to 8 p.m. at the church at 429 W. Rockwood St. Food, games, prizes and Christian fellowship are among the attractions; those attending will have opportunities to visit the city’s oldest church and hear about the Presbyterian denomination.

  • New pastor leads Clymersville church

    Chad Morrison is the new pastor at Clymersville Baptist Church in Rockwood.

    His first Sunday in the pulpit was July 29.

    “This is my first pastorate. It’s exciting, but I’m very nervous,” he said.

    Morrison, 29, comes to Rockwood from Louisville in Blount County.

    He and his wife Melissa have a son, Levi, 3.

    Over the past nine years, Morrison has served as youth and family pastor at three different churches in Maryville and Kingston.
