    A day reserved for meditation during a spiritual retreat in Boston quickly turned stressful for Kara Foster.

    The Rockwood First Christian Church pastor found herself in upheaval when she realized friends and family were receiving e-mails from someone claiming to be her. Someone who was mugged in London and desperate for money to get home.

    With her mind at ease and her cell phone on silent, Foster said she kept getting calls while she was in the midst of her day of silence.

    That’s what Harriman City Attorney Harold Balcom called a motion to dismiss filed for Site Inc., David Robinette, D-K Properties II LLC, Steve H. Kirkham, Jerry Duncan and Judy Duncan in a lawsuit and countersuit concerning who owes whom on a project involving public and private property.

    “It is a public publicity stunt to indicate to the general public, ‘Oh, we can’t be held responsible,’” Balcom said.

  • Stockton aims to stay the course with public service

    When is the last time an incumbent sheriff in Roane County had just one opponent?

    Prior to the 2010 election, you would have to go back more than 30 years to find an example.

    “That was odd,” Sheriff Jack Stockton said, of this year’s race in which he faced just one opponent. “I don’t remember a one-on-one race.”

    The sheriff’s race usually has a crowded field. When Stockton won his first term in 2006, he was one of six candidates.

  • Adventure’s beyond the roll of the dice, and the story forms characters’ fate in Dungeons & Dragons

    An epic adventure awaits with magical adventures, twists and turns in a participant-shaped story.

    Members of the Roane State Dungeoneers meet weekly on the main campus of Roane State Community College for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, a role-playing game involving a story, dice and tiny representations of characters on a playing board, or battle-grid pieces.

    Dungeon Master Michael Golebiewski helps tell the stories and aids players in making the decisions on what to do.

  • Nekuri leads Roane Medical hospitalists

    Roane Medical Center has named Dr. Suresh K. Nekuri as medical director for the Harriman-based hospital’s evolving hospitalist program.

    As the hospitalist medical director, Nekuri will interact with other hospitalists, the medical staff and hospital leaders to provide care for the increasing number of inpatients assigned to the hospitalist services.

    “I am pleased to offer patients the personalized care that they seek during their time at Roane Medical Center,” Nekuri said.

  • Alliance gears up for Gala Nov. 19

    The Roane Alliance’s annual fund-raising Gala will be “rolling out the red carpet for a night of Hollywood stars this year,” said Alliance President and CEO Leslie Henderson.

    The Alliance Gala is planned for Nov. 19.

    It is one of the county’s premier social events and features a gourmet meal, a wine reception, music and entertainment, live and silent auctions and — new this year — a Hollywood theme.
