  • How does United Way divvy up funds?

    Roane County United Way is extremely grateful to all the volunteers who have served and continue to serve on its funds allocation review panels.

    “For those who may not know, the United Way uses a very rigorous process for determining how your contributions will be divided among our community partners,” said Deborah Alexander Davis of the Roane County United Way. “This process ensures contributions are allocated to best meet the needs of Roane County residents across six service areas.”

  • Program aims to protect voter rights

    Assistant U.S. Attorney Perry H. Piper will lead the efforts of the U.S. Attorney’s office, in connection with the Justice Department’s nationwide Election Day Program, for the upcoming Nov. 6 general elections.

    Piper has been appointed to serve as the district election officer for the Eastern District of Tennessee.

    In that capacity, he is responsible for overseeing the district’s handling of complaints of election fraud and voting rights abuses in consultation with Justice Department Headquarters in Washington.

  • Harriman Happenings: Nov. 5

    God gave us a wonderful day Sunday as the women of St. Mary’s Baptist Church celebrated our annual Women’s Day.

    The theme was “Women of Faith.” Sister Joann Palmer was the worship leader for the morning worship service.

    Music was provided by different tapes, which were great. Our theme song was “Have Faith in God.”

    Sister Elfredia Williams was our speaker. Her message was great.

    Our afternoon worship leader was Sister Sheila Hall.

  • Polk Salad Fest, Pageant end reign

    The popular springtime festival at Harriman’s David Webb Riverfront Park is being retired.

    David Webb, the park’s namesake, has helmed the festival since its inception in 2008, when it spun off from the initial Miss Polk Salad pageant.

    “We are trying to encourage him to do things for himself. He’s 76 years old, and he needs to be having some fun,” said Webb’s daughter, Debbie Mee.

    “We just want him to have more time with family. It is hard for him, but he knows it is the best thing.”

  • Relay for Life gears up for '13

    Roane County’s Relay for Life exceeded its 2012 goal of $52,000, instead raising around $60,000.

    With that in mind, and a goal of increasing the number of teams, coordinators for the American Cancer Society fundraiser have set an even higher goal next year of $75,000.

    “The kind of overall theme of Relay is ‘dream big, hope big and Relay big,’ so in Roane County we’re planning big,” said chairwoman Fran Puckett.

    Kickoff is 5:30 p.m. Nov. 13 in Rockwood First Presbyterian Church.

    Jennifer Mathieu asked if she could retrieve some underclothes when deputies showed up to arrest her on a theft warrant last Thursday.

  • Decision 2012: Republicans working to color blue states

    For those who want to see President Obama defeated on Election Day, Tennessee is not the state they have to worry about.

    “It’s clearly a red state,” U.S. Congressman Chuck Fleischmann said.

    That’s why members of the Roane County Tea Party have spent time in battleground states this election season.

    “I spent the weekend in Ohio two weeks ago going door-to-door,” Co-Chairman Gary Johnston said.

  • Decision 2012: Democratic support a costly endeavor

    The back window of Bob Cowan’s truck is a collage of pro-Obama and pro-Democrat stickers.

    Showing support for his president and party hasn’t been cheap for Cowan, however.

    The chairman of the Roane County Democratic Party said he once had his truck keyed.

    “It took $1,300 to get it fixed,” he said.

    Instead of taking down the stickers, Cowan said he was so upset that he decided to put more stickers on his back window.

  • Decision 2012: Lines may be long at polling sites

    Turnout was brisk during early voting in Roane County.

    Administrator of Elections Charles Holiway said 12,664 people cast early and absentee ballots during the Oct. 17-Nov. 1 period.

    That was more than the total number of votes (11,156) cast in the Aug. 2 state primary and county general election.
