  • County official clocked at nearly 100 mph vexed about speeding ticket

    Roane County Property Assessor Teresa Kirkham was ticketed for speeding on Interstate 40.

    Then she seemed irked that she was being given a ticket, according to a report by Roane County Sheriff’s Deputy Joshua Currier.

  • Election official makes plea to keep staff

    Two Democrat and one Republican votes and Tony Brown might be able to stay on as Roane County’s Administrator of Elections.

    “But I don’t think that’s going to happen,” Brown said.

    The five-member Roane County Election Commission is about to flip from three Democrats and two Republicans to three Republicans and two Democrats.

  • School bus in fatal accident; no students hurt

    An Oliver Springs man was killed and at least four others were injured in a traffic accident involving a Roane County school bus on Hwy. 61 near Oliver Springs Tuesday morning.

    Kenneth Collins was dead on the scene of the early morning crash, said Trooper Rodney Redmon of the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

    Witnesses told authorities a pickup truck heading east on Hwy. 61 crossed the center line and struck the bus head on, Redmon said.

  • Proposed election board changes announced

    James R. Ryans is already involved in public service as a member of Roane County’s Board of Public Utilities.

    Now he has a chance to serve the county in a political capacity after his appointment to the Roane County Election Commission.     

    The state announced the appointees on Monday.

    Ryans said Republican state Sen. Ken Yager asked him a couple of months ago if he was interested in serving.

  • Legislators defend measures

    State legislators representing Roane County defended a pair of environmental measures last week that have landed them criticism.

    Rep. Dennis Ferguson and Sen. Ken Yager, who met with residents at Kingston Community Center Thursday to listen to concerns, also said they had made alteration to the proposed legislation.

  • Commissioners may get constable power

    The decision on whether to abolish the office of constable in Roane County could rest with the people.

    At least that’s the way one legislator would like to see it.

    “I’ve advised the commission of this,” state Sen. Ken Yager said. “Since we are talking about elected officials, we are looking into the possibility of having a ratification by the people in the next election. That is something that’s been looked at.”

  • Lady Waves fall in title game, 1-0

    For the past three years, the Midway Lady Green Waves have won the Region 2-A championship and used the home field advantage that came with that victory as a springboard to making the TSSAA Class A State Tournament in Murfreesboro.

    However, if the Lady Waves are going to make the trip to Murfreesboro this year, they will have to do it without the comforts of home during Friday's TSSAA Class A Sectional as Coalfield knocked off the Lady Waves Wednesday evening in a classic Region 2-A championship game, 1-0.

  • Hall signs with Maryville

    When Todd Wright was the head coach at Oliver Springs High School, he relied on Laura Hall to lead one of the state's top programs.

    Wright has since moved on and is now the head coach at Maryville College, be he will still be counting on a Hall to lead his team as the Lady Scots signed Kelsey Hall, Laura'a sister, to a scholarship last week.

  • Tigers top Waves, 8-0

    Rockwood's Tyler Skidmore set the tone Monday afternoon as the Tiger lead off hitter hit the first pitch of Monday's District 3-A Tournament against Midway out of the park and the result was an 8-0 Rockwood victory over the Green Wave in an elimination game for both teams.

    For Rockwood, the Tigers dream of a 13th straight region tournament appearance are still alive as they entered Tuesday's game with No. 1 seed Grace Christian Academy.
