  • Salvation Army honors Young for years of service

    The Roane/Morgan County Salvation Army Unit recently honored Jim Young of Kingston for his years of public service in the organization.

    Young is moving from the area and will be resigning from the board.

    His attention to the plight of others started when he was a young man. He attended Emory and Henry University in Atlanta and participated in the early fight against segregation by organizing and participating in marches.

    Taylor Ann Smith turned 4 years old on Nov. 21.

    She celebrated with a Pinkalicious party.

    She is the daughter of Will and Kristy Smith of Harriman.

    Grandparents are Steve and Mona Bolden of Harriman and Diane Smith of Oakdale.

    Taylor has a 2 1/2-year-old brother, Liam.

  • Roane State offering FAFSA help in Oak Ridge

    Roane State Community College’s Oak Ridge campus will host College Goal Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Feb. 13.

    High school seniors, their parents or anyone interested in attending college in the fall will have the opportunity to talk with Roane State representatives about applying for college and about receiving financial aid.

    The Oak Ridge event is one of several College Goal Sundays planned across the state that day.

  • Sheriff’s office gives residents easy access to Roane offender information

    Roane County residents now have fast access to custody information on county jail offenders, thanks to the Tennessee Sheriffs’ Association and annual funding from the state of Tennessee throughout 78 counties.

    Roane County Sheriff Jack Stockton has joined and launched TNSAVIN, an automated service utilizing the Victim Information Notification Everyday system in which citizens can access a 24-hour-a-day notification system either by telephone or the Internet.

    In the eyes of Virginia Hackler of Harriman, her son, Robert Hackler, was a hero. When the 36-year-old man of Lansing, Mich., learned that his sister, Linda Demo, 41, of Knoxville, would never lead a normal life again without a kidney transplant, he offered her one of his. Demo lost one kidney from a congenital kidney disease 16 years previously and had been dependent on a dialysis machine for survival since January 1985.

  • Changes sought in Plateau Park relationship

    Ron Woody said he’s not opposed to multi-county partnerships.

    “But I think it should be an equal distribution of the rewards,” he said. The way Woody sees it, the Plateau Partnership Park doesn’t provide for that.  

    “Everybody is using our money and theirs, but we’re getting very little benefit from it, as opposed to at least what Cumberland County is getting,” Woody said.

  • Kingston leads way on election changes

    A movement that began in Kingston could lead to some election changes — and leave more money in city coffers.

    Kingston City Councilman Tim Neal has been pushing for a referendum to change the municipal election cycle in Kingston to coincide with state and national elections.

    “It was a no-brainer with the amount of money we spend on the elections every two years,” Neal said.
