  • Harriman approves MMA fight at Riverfront Park

    Rockwood might not be interested, but Harriman City Council wasn’t discouraged from approving use of their facilities for a mixed martial arts competition.

    “It is a positive thing to bring more people into town. It is a growing sport,” Councilman Chase Tedder said.

    Harriman gave the nod to Steve Robinette, who has been a big advocate of the sport in the area, including training people he believes have potential to make it big professionally.

  • TVA releases draft plan for agency's future

    The Tennessee Valley Authority has issued a draft of its Integrated Resource Plan, a comprehensive study that will help guide efforts to meet regional electricity needs over the next 20 years.

    Titled “TVA’s Environmental and Energy Future,” the study analyzes potential combinations of economic and regulatory trends in the coming years and provides recommendations for addressing them.

  • IMPRESSIONS: A little literacy and a big ol' Hokie gobble

    My colleagues are having way too much fun with me these days.

    One even spun and shared an exaggerated tale turned urban legend based on some sketchy information he received following a recent project I worked on in Annapolis, Md.

    For some strange reason, his version of the story suggested I single-handedly wrecked a major system at our big newspaper up there.

    Shoot, all I was trying to do was scope out some equipment we want to give a new home here.

  • Abels celebrates his 90th birthday

    Kenneth Ray “Kenny” Abels Sr. of Oliver Springs celebrated his 90th birthday on Sept. 3 with a party given in his honor and attended by many relatives and friends.

    He is the son of the late Robert and Nancy Ables, who lived in Rockwood.

    He and his wife, Kathleen Daniels Abels, had been married for 45 years when she died in 1991.

    A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he worked as a coal miner in Fork Mountain, Tenn., then at Brushy Mountain Prison. He retired from J.C. Penney Co. in 1984.

  • Scholarship among the winnings in Rockwood Fall Fest pageant

    This year’s winner of Rockwood Fall Festival’s Miss Teen Fall Festival Pageant will receive more than a sash and tiara.

    Pageant sponsor Rockwood 2000 is awarding the 2010 winner a $500 scholarship to be applied toward tuition at her choice of educational institution, including universities, colleges, beauty and technical education centers.

    The pageant is among those Rockwood 2000 will have during the Rockwood Fall Festival on Oct. 2 at Homecoming Park on North Front Avenue in downtown Rockwood.

  • Mr. & Mrs. Tedder

    Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Tedder will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception for family and friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 25 in Kingston Community Center.

    Tedder and the former Barbara Young were married on Sept. 25, 1960, in Harriman, with Bro. J.T. West officiating.

    He is retired from Y-12.

    Their two sons and daughters-in-law are Eddie and Patty Tedder of Friendsville and Marty and Robin Tedder of Harriman.

    There are three grandchildren, Carrie Tedder, Jace Tedder and Cole Tedder.

  • Mr. & Mrs. Cox 44th

    Mr. and Mrs. Howard Cox of Kingston will celebrate their 44th wedding anniversary on Sept. 23 at their home with family.

    Cox and the former Betty Murray were married on Sept. 23, 1966, in Riverside Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tom Scarbrough officiating.

    He is a retired teacher from the Harriman City school system, and she is a housewife.

    Their three children and spouses are Tonya and Randy Peterson of Niota; Sonya and Bryan Miller of Kingston; and Michael Cox of Kingston.

  • Tigers win sub district

    The Rockwood boys golf team put on an impressive show last week as the Tigers cruised to a 14-shot victory at the sub District 3-A/AA Tournament.

    The Tigers shot a team total of 150, which was 14 shots better than Stone Memorial.
