  • Mr. & Mrs. Longmire 50th

    Mr. and Mrs. Joe Longmire of Kingston will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 11.
    Longmire and the former Lois Oran were married on Sept. 11, 1960, in Paint Rock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Cline Frisbee officiating.
    Their celebration includes her going shopping and him watching his favorite football team, the Tennessee Vols, with a possible trip to McDonald’s for dinner.
    He is retired from Y-12 Plant with 30 years of service, and she is a housewife.

    • Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 3429, Midtown, will have a “Helping Hunter Party in the Park” from 5 to 8 p.m. at Roane County Park. Proceeds will benefit Hunter King, who has autism and whose family is working to purchase a service dog trained to assist autistic children. A silent auction, bake sale and children's games are planned.

  • Roane School of Isshin-ryu impressive in tourney

    At the recent Isshin-ryu Hall of Fame Tournament, held in Knoxville, TN, the Roane School of Isshin-ryu Karate in Harriman, along with Palmer’s School of Isshin-ryu Karate in Crossville, captured an impressive 14 trophies from among some of the finest Isshin-ryu competitors in the country.

  • Norwood too much for Harriman

    In what could be aptly described as a shootout, the Norwood Jaguars came out victorious over the Harriman Middle School Blue Devils 26-20 Thursday night at Wallace Black Field. 

  • Defense leads Cherokee past Midway, 26-0

    The Cherokee Middle School Yellow Jackets win streak against Midway reached five games following a 26-0 win over the Green Waves last Thursday at Midway.

  • Computerized drawing to be held for selected waterfowl sites

    The application period will be Wednesday, Sept. 8 through midnight (CDT) on Wednesday, Oct. 13 for the computerized hunt drawing system to be used for 2010-11 waterfowl blind sites on Bogota, the new Thorny Cypress Wildlife Management Area in Dyer County (Region I) and four units of the Region III Chickamauga WMA (Candies Creek, Johnson Bottoms, Rogers Creek, and Yellow Creek).

  • Milestones Policy

    The Roane County News charges a $5 fee for birthday announcements and a $15 fee for engagement announcements.

    The fee will ensure placement in the Wednesday paper, provided the announcements are in house by 3 p.m. the previous Friday. The Roane County News reserves the right to edit for clarity, style and format.

    Birthdays are accepted only for children ages 1-10 and adults ages 85-99. All 100-year birthdays are published at no charge. All birthdays must be celebrated within TWO MONTHS of the date of submission.

  • Management group to meet

    The East Tennessee Chapter of the National Contract Management Association will have its monthly membership luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 8 in the Double Tree Hotel, Oak Ridge.
    Barbara Jackson of the U.S. Department of Energy will be the guest speaker.
    Lunch for members is $15, nonmembers pay $16.
