  • Cherokee puts up 50 points in win

    After pummeling Norwood in their season opener, 40-0, the Cherokee Yellow Jackets made it 2-0 recently with a 50-6 victory over Wartburg.

    Cherokee’s offense was unstoppable in the victory as the Yellow Jackets scored on all seven possessions.

  • Rockwood man killed by train

    STAFF REPORTS
    A man was struck and killed by a train Tuesday afternoon. The incident happened near the Rockwood wastewater plant.
    Rockwood Police Chief Bill Stinnett said they were still investigating
    what happened.
    He identified the deceased man as Stephen Hickey. Stinnett said Hickey lived out toward the mountain and walked along the railroad tracks all the
    time.

  • Schools get Shining Star for Tasty Tuesdays

    A healthy eating program in almost all Roane County elementary schools received the 2009-10 Shining Star Award from the Tennessee Governors Council on Physical Fitness and Health.
    The award recognized the Roane County Tennessee Nutrition and Consumer Education Program Coalition for Tasty Tuesdays, a program that provides elementary-age children a chance to try different fruits and vegetables each month.
    Educational information is given to educators to share in the classroom.

  • 'There's many things for Roane County I can work for'

    Public service, not politics.
    James “Dub” Harmon said that’s how he always viewed his job as a county commissioner.
    Harmon’s public service may continue, but his days of doing it as a commissioner will come to an end on Tuesday. That’s when current commission terms expire.
    Harmon, the commission’s most senior member in terms of age and tenure, lost his re-election bid earlier this month.   

  • Apply by Oct. 8 for recycling grant

    The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation’s Division of Solid Waste Management is accepting applications for recycling equipment grants.
    Grant applications are due by Oct. 8.
    Recycling equipment grants are available to local governments and nonprofit organizations working with local governments.
    Grant funds may be used to purchase key pieces of equipment to establish new recycling programs, to improve existing operations or to prepare recyclable materials for transport or sale.

  • Course helps HR certification

    Human resources professionals who want to review before taking the Professional in Human Resources or Senior Professional in Human Resources certification exams can take advantage of a class offered at Roane State Community College’s Oak Ridge campus.
    The college’s Office of Community Outreach and Professional Training is presenting a course that utilizes the SHRM Learning System, the most widely used tool available to prepare for the certification exams.

  • Lawnville bridge work to finish Oct. 31

    For weeks, crews have been doing construction work on the Lawnville Road bridge over Interstate 40 near Kingston in Roane County.
    In an e-mail, Tennessee Department of Transportation spokeswoman Yvette Martinez said the work is a repair project that consists of removing the asphalt layers to expose the concrete deck.
    “Crews checked the deck for any needed partial or full-depth repairs,” she said.

  • Kingston dress code a no go

    Earlier this summer, Kingston city officials raised the issue of a revised dress code — or, more specifically, a personal appearance code.
    And then they sank it.
    City Manager Jim Pinkerton brought the topic before the city council in July as part of potential changes to the dress and appearance part of Kingston’s personnel manual.

  • THP to conduct license check in Roane County

    The Tennessee Highway Patrol will conduct driver license roadside safety checkpoints during the week of Sept. 3 on Pine Ridge Road in Roane County.
    Recognizing the danger presented to the public by unqualified drivers, troopers will concentrate their efforts on vehicles being operated by drivers who would violate the driver license laws of Tennessee.
    THP officials said they have found these driver license roadside safety checkpoints to be an effective means of enforcing driver license laws of Tennessee while ensuring the protection of all motorists.
