  • Fifth-graders to participate in BizTown

    B&W Y-12 has partnered with Junior Achievement of East Tennessee to prepare the future workforce of East Tennessee.
    Fifth-grade students have their share of limitations — voting, driving and working, among others.
    That doesn’t stop them from running a city at Junior Achievement’s JA BizTown in Clinton.
    There, students are taught to connect the dots between what they learn in school and what happens in the real world.
    At JA BizTown, students operate banks, manage restaurants and write checks all in a day’s time.

  • Kennel club plans events in Roane

    Tennessee Valley Kennel Club is planning special events this month in Roane County.
    The club’s AKC dog agility trials will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 10-12 at the East Tennessee Agricultural Exposition Center on the Roane State Community College campus at 276 Patton Lane.
    This free event will feature more than 100 dogs of all sizes and their handlers.
    Dog agility is a sport in which a handler directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy.
    Obstacles include A-frame, dog walk, teeter, table, jumps and tunnels.

  • Register now for homeschool studies

    American Museum of Science and Energy’s fall homeschool program registration is now open for grades K-6.
    The interactive programs take place twice monthly, except in November, on subjects including nature, nutrition, science and electricity presented by the educational staff at the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge.
    The registration form, cost and program descriptions are online at www.amse.org.

    The Kingston Lady Jackets soccer team faced off against a tough Hardin Valley Academy Lady Hawks squad and found themselves in trouble, falling by a 7-0 tally.

  • Kingston takes two from Harriman

    Week one of the Tennessee Valley League was completed Saturday with both games being played in Roane County.

    The biggest game in the county was at Harriman where the Blue Devils entertained Kingston. Kingston was able to take two of three against the Blue Devils.

  • Physicians Plaza to locate across from Pinnacle Pointe

    With the anticipated move of Roane Medical Center to Midtown on the horizon, several healthcare providers are already planning a move to a new Physicians Plaza of Roane County.

    The plaza will be directly across from Pinnacle Pointe shopping center, on Hwy. 70 near Interstate 40 Exit 350.

  • Kim Nelson steps down from school board

    Circuit Court Clerk Kim Nelson has resigned her seat on the Roane County Board of Education. Nelson was elected circuit clerk in August. She was elected to the school board in 2008, and still had two years remaining on a four-year term.

    Nelson was sworn in as circuit clerk Wednesday morning at the courthouse. Her reason for resigning from the school board was explained in a statement she passed out.
