  • 29 attend Lands reunion

    Twenty-nine friends and relatives gathered for the recent 49th annual Lands family reunion in the fellowship hall of North Rockwood Baptist Church.

    Those attending from out of town were Donna, Greg, Rachel and Jacob Townsend and Ryan Austin of Big Stone Gap, Va.; Rhonda, Alberta and Casey Whittenberg of Murfreesboro; Robert and Kathleen Lands of Dayton; and Linda and David Hudson of Ooltewah.

  • Free Medical Clinic on the move

    After nearly four years in its original location on Robertsville Road, the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge is moving.

    The clinic will be closed Oct. 11 and Oct. 14 for the move.

    When it reopens on Oct. 15, it will be at its new location at 116 East Division Road, Oak Ridge.

    The new site is across Oak Ridge Turnpike from Methodist Medical Center.

    The phone number, 865-483-3904, and fax number, 865-481-0203, will remain the same.

  • The Garden Gate: Some plants are spooky all year long

    Area markets are featuring enormous pumpkins and, even though it isn’t quite Halloween time, preparations are afoot for that annual day of witches, haunts, goblins and ghosts.

    Some plants, however, haunt us all the year around. Even trees, usually thought of as friendly things, might sometimes be considered alarming at this time of year. What about strangler figs, witch hazels or dragon trees?

    The Roane County News’ latest vacation was an island getaway — to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Mich.

    The group vacation of Roane Countians includes Debbie Ripoll, Glendora Tweed, Caroline Diggs, Judy Daniels and Fred Miles of Heartland Tours.

    “The group also visited Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland and stopped off for a stay at Thunder Bay resort,” Diggs said. “The Creation Museum was another stop on the tour on the way home.”

  • Alliance program wins big

    The Roane Alliance’s Education Matters! program has been selected as a Gold Award recipient by the International Economic Development Council for Excellence in Economic Development.
    The award was presented at the 2013 IEDC Annual Conference in Philadelphia Monday.

    Receiving the award on behalf of The Alliance was Leslie Henderson, Alliance president andCEO, and Allen Lutz, education and workforce development specialist at The Alliance.

  • Roane couple charged in robbery spree

    Accused robbers Mark Andrew Randolph and Rufena Jean Bunch face charges in federal court.
    The 35-year-old Randolph was indicted last week by a federal grand jury on five counts of robbery, five counts of using a firearm during a crime and one count of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.  

    He allegedly robbed five businesses between Sept. 19-27.
