  • Operation Christmas Child under way to help needy youngsters

    With the Christmas season quickly approaching, Operation Christmas Child is getting under way.

    Operated under Samaritan’s Purse, an international and evangelical relief organization, Operation Christmas Child is both a national and international project aimed at filling shoe boxes with gifts and sending them abroad to children in need.

    Drop-offs will be accepted during the organization’s national collection week Nov. 14-21.

    Did the truth motivate Bill Walton — or was it TVA greenbacks that persuaded his conclusions?

    Walton, an AECOM official who conducted the root-cause analysis into the TVA ash spill, insisted it was the former.

    “My job was to give you the why of this failure,” he said during cross-examination at the ash spill trial on Tuesday. “I believe I delivered on doing a thorough investigation.”

    Checoria Foster and her brother, Demarcus, were Roane County High School’s homecoming queen and king at the school’s game against Lenoir City on Sept. 23.

  • Oak Ridge oversight group may be nuked

    Susan Gawarecki holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, a master’s from Lehigh University and a doctorate from the University of South Carolina.

    Despite those lofty credentials, Gawarecki, executive director of the Oak Ridge Reservation Local Oversight Committee, could soon find herself out of a job.

    The committee’s purpose is to ensure that communities adjacent to and downstream of the Oak Ridge Reservation are protected during cleanup and continued operation of the facilities, many of which deal with nuclear materials.

  • Kingston to hold decorating contest

    Kingston’s parks and recreation department head said community pride and beautification should start with them.

    And so, announced parks director Rick Ross, they are having a fall/Halloween decoration contest for businesses and residents in Kingston.

    The department will do the judging and will award the winners with a yard sign proclaiming their winning status.

    Business and resident will be separate categories.

    Anyone who would like to be judged should call them at 376-9476 by Oct. 21.

    Three of the four people who interviewed for the Rockwood city administrator position have a Rockwood connection.

    The position, originally the city recorder position under the recently retired Jim Hines, has been vacant only a short while.

    Cherokee Middle School and Harriman Middle School will be hosting Clinch Valley Conference championship games this Thursday.

    In the large school division, Cherokee will take on Rockwood at Dr. Nat Sugarman Field beginning at 7 p.m..
