  • Schools' scores lower, but ....

    The lowest scores you have ever seen.
    Parents of Roane County Schools students can expect to see that when the state report card is released later this year, according to Director of Schools Toni McGriff.
    She attributed the pending gloom to changes in how student achievement is measured by the state.
    The standards have increased.      
    “It doesn’t mean the children know less,” McGriff told Board of Education members last week.

  • Driving Miss Sadie: Katrina refugees in Rockwood go home

    Bruce and Diana Knobloch had their flights booked for their August trip to New Orleans for the annual Satchmo Festival honoring Louis Armstrong.
    But their August trip to the Crescent City took a turn of its own before they could get up in the air.
    It started with a late July phone call to the Roane County United Way office where Diana is director.
    The call was from “Miss Sadie” Butler, a 94-year-old who, with her son, Joe, landed in Rockwood as one of the last fugitives evacuated from Hurricane Katrina.

  • Mr. & Mrs. Morton 50th

    Mr. and Mrs. Ted Morton will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 10.
    They will celebrate with a reception for family and friends from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 11 in Kingston First Baptist Church family life center.
    Morton and the former Carolyn Christopher were married on Sept. 10, 1960, in Kingston, with Brother Rudder officiating.
    He is retired from Martin Marietta, and she is retired from the Roane County Health Department.
    The couple has three children: Karen Morton of Atlantic Beach, Fla., Ted Morton Jr. and Amy Workman, both of Kingston.

  • No sirens for Y-12 emergency drill

    Emergency personnel from the National Nuclear Security Administration and B&W Y-12, along with federal, state and local emergency management personnel, will conduct an emergency management exercise Aug. 25 at the Y-12 National Security Complex.
    The public may observe emergency personnel performing environmental monitoring or sampling. These offsite activities are part of the exercise, which will simulate a chemical release.
