    A group of residents of a Harriman Garden building are back in their apartments  and got a surprising bounty of good eats to celebrate Thanksgiving.

    Roane County Commissioner Randy Ellis got inspired to seek donations to provide the meals after the residents of the 925 Sewanee St. complex were temporarily displaced when a fire last weekend forced them to the Harriman Community Center or the homes of family and friends.

    “This is what Roane County is known for,” Ellis said.

    “Yes, I have often been scared out of my wits,” he says in a book he wrote to help new drivers, and their parents, understand the most important safety rules in driving.

  • Feeding hearts and stomachs this holiday season

    Lee Sexton teamed up with Victorian Square to prepare and deliver about 100 food boxes to families, along with the residents of Harriman Gardens.

    Lee Sexton is the one who initiated and provided the funds for the food drive. He contacted Victorian Square to see if there was any way to help, and they ended up donated their kitchen to prepare the food and box it up.

    Sexton previously helped with his uncle’s food drive in Scott County and felt the need to bring it to Roane County now that he was living here.

    The most successful postseason run in Oliver Springs football history came to a disappointing close Friday night as a powerful Friendship Christian School (FCS) squad from Lebanon rolled into D.J. Brittan Field and downed the Bobcats in the TSSAA Class AA semifinals, 39-6.

    The Commanders used a huge offensive line to grind out 346 yards rushing and 433 total yards while holding the Bobcats to 220 total yards.

  • RSCC holds holiday concert

    Get in the festive spirit by joining the Roane State Community College choral and instrumental ensembles in a holiday celebration.

    The college’s annual holiday concert will be held Friday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 11, at 3 p.m. in the O’Brien Theater.

    The Concert Choir will offer “A Song Is Born,” a cantata for Christmas by Douglas Nolan.
    The Celebration Singers, Jazz Band and Bluegrass Band will perform holiday favorites, including some pop collaboration.

  • Bishop to speak at Swan Pond church

    United Methodist Church Holston Conference Bishop James Swanson will be the guest speaker on Dec. 4 at Swan Pond United Methodist Church, Harriman.

    The worship service will begin at 10 a.m.

    “Swan Pond Methodist Church is excited about Bishop Swanson’s visit as the church continues its 185th  anniversary celebration this year,” church member Mike Hill said.
