  • Embattled bar loses beer license

    The Roane County Beer Board voted Tuesday to revoke the Grill & Pub’s beer permit for a year.
    Sheriff Jack Stockton drove to the bar north of Harriman after the meeting to inform owner Grover Norton about the revocation.
    “I’m just here to deliver the message,” he said.
    Norton had little to say about the setback.
    “I expected his demeanor to be worse than what it was,” Stockton said. “I was shocked.”

  • Harriman fugitive found in attic

    A Harriman man who eluded Morgan County authorities last week was captured at his girlfriend’s home in Petros Saturday morning.
    Richard Allen Howard, 29, of 925 Chilhowee St., who had warrants for his arrest in Oliver Springs, was pulled over in Bitter Creek with a flat tire.
    Morgan County Deputy Billy Giles pulled in behind the vehicle, and Howard took off on foot and lost Giles in the chase.
    Howard also allegedly tossed a gun in the woods while on the run.

  • Rockwood takes on rundown property

    Rockwood is taking steps to make its property maintenance regulations stronger.
    “What we did is pass a series of ordinances that as far as dealing with unkept property we can now go to Chancery Court and get something done — get a lien against the property and either make them pay or we can sell it and get our money back,” said Mayor James Watts.
    Changes to property maintenance regulations include additional wording in various sections. Changes call for a notice to run in the local newspaper for two weeks if  a violator cannot be found.

  • Head Start now taking applications

    Mid-East Community Action Agency is accepting applications to enroll children in Head Start.

    Head Start is a federal early childhood program that promotes school readiness from ages birth to 5 in low-income families by enhancing cognitive, social and emotional development.

    It provides a learning environment that supports children’s growth in language and literacy, cognition and general knowledge, physical development and health, social and emotional development and approaches to learning.

    Vendor and exhibitor applications for Oak Ridge’s 11th annual Secret City Festival are now available online.

    Applications may be downloaded at www.SecretCityFestival.com.

    This year’s Secret City Festival will be June 21-22 at AK Bissell Park.

    Applications are available for arts and crafts, exhibitors and food vendors.

    Applications for Tennessee Creates, the juried arts show, will be available at a later date.

  • Yager offers student page opportunities

    State Sen. Ken Yager, R-Harriman, is welcoming Roane County students in grades 6-12 to experience the legislature in action as a page in the State Senate.

    “This is the best civics lesson I can imagine,” he said.

    “Student pages are right there with us on the Senate floor. They get a unique front-row view of the lawmaking process.”
