  • Devils knocked out of state tourney

    With no seniors on his roster, Harriman head coach Andy Adcox knew his Blue Devils might run into some trouble this week at the TSSAA Class A State Tournament in Murfreesboro. Adcox was right as his squad was eliminated after two games.

     

    Powerful Decatur County Riverside bested the Blue Devils 16-3 in Tuesday’s tournament opener then Nashville Christian School (NCS) ended the Blue Devils season on Wednesday, 9-4.

  • When did water board members step aside?

    Rockwood Water, Sewer and Gas Board Chairman Harold Ishman first received word that three board members were resigning in letters dated March 26.

    Those documents, delivered to Ishman before what was to be the board’s April 26 meeting, indicated Carl Lehman, LeRoy Wilson and Dean Woodall planned to step off the board in a month, on May 26.

    They weren’t, however, the only notices he received. About two weeks later, Ishman received a second set of letters at his home.

  • Two injured when plane overshoots runway

    Two people were injured on Memorial Day when a small single-engine plane overshot a runway at Oliver Springs Airport.

    Anderson County Sheriff’s Deputy William S. Lucas identified the victims as Elizabeth Reilly Fiala, 57, and Thomas Alan Fiala, 67, both of Dickson.

    Lucas reported he met with Oliver Springs police at the airport at 320 Airport Road and saw the aircraft in a creek off the north end of the runway.

  • Keeper of the stones: Dyllis Cemetery trustee takes job personally

    On Memorial Day, the focus is on lost loved ones.

    Bob Brannon, however, a trustee for Dyllis Cemetery, makes remembering an everyday thing.

    He long had been a dedicated trustee, but since the death of his wife, Jeanette, in 2006, he’s there practically daily.

    “I do it because I’m 79,” Brannon said. “I have nothing else to do in the summertime besides this and feeding my cat,.”

  • Ishman, Nuckols get OK to sign workers' checks

    Monday was the scheduled payday for the 34 employees of Rockwood Water, Sewer and Natural Gas.

    Due to the Memorial Day holiday, they won’t receive their paychecks until Tuesday.

    A day’s wait is a welcome relief, however, for many of the workers who worried last week they wouldn’t receive their pay at all because of the believed disbandment of Rockwood Water, Sewer and Gas Board.

  • Farmer skeptical of reappraisals

    Roane County Executive Mike Farmer said he shares the pain many property owners are feeling.

    The reappraisal upped the value on his home from $336,500 to $482,500.

    “There’s a lot of things that make it very difficult for county officials as well as property owners in Roane County to understand the information about the reappraisal,” Farmer said.

  • Old jail plan nice, but ohhhhh! the price

    The plan sounds good.

    The price doesn’t.

    Commissioner James Brummett said that was his impression of a re-use study for the old county jail.

    The cost to renovate the building was estimated at $696,056.

    The price tag, according to SpiritArchitecture’s Scott Rozanski, assumes that the project would go out for bid in July. 

    “I wouldn’t recommend putting that kind of money in it at this time,” Brummett said.

  • Blue Devils headed to State Tournament

    Some teams just know how to win and the Harriman Blue Devils are one of those teams as Saturday evening Andy Adcox’s squad scratched and clawed their way to a 9-7 victory over Unaka in the sectional round of the TSSAA Class A postseason.

    With the victory, Harriman now advances to the TSSAA Class A State Tournament that begins Tuesday evening in Murfreesboro.

    “It’s incredible what this team has accomplished this year from day one until today,” Blue Devil head coach Andy Adcox said.

  • Money juggled for VA clinic

    The Roane County Economic Development Foundation Board approved a request from Rockwood to move some of the city’s already alloted money for paving to pay for the replacement of a heating and cooling system at the future veterans clinic.

    The foundation board unanimously approved the move.

    The veterans clinic will be operated by a private business in the Chamberlain Professional Building in downtown Rockwood.

  • Cawood sues over courthouse arrest

    Attorney Chris Cawood is seeking $100,000 in damages over a courthouse fracas that occurred in May 2009.

    Roane County Sheriff’s Deputy Guy McGuckin used a chokehold to restrain Cawood, who was arrested and charged with resisting arrest.

    A judge found Cawood not guilty during a trial last November. 

    In a lawsuit filed by his attorney, Dan Channing Stanley, Cawood alleges he was assaulted, falsely arrested and maliciously prosecuted.
