  • Developer owns wetlands Harriman oversees

    Although wetlands at the Pinnacle Pointe shopping center  are on privately owned property, the city of Harriman is responsible for monitoring them for the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

    It’s a task that’s proved challenging.

    City officials and Prestige Land Co. partners Jerry Duncan and Steve Kirkham have been embroiled in a three-year tug-of-war over money each says the other owes them involving moving earth on the property.

  • Harriman splits with Greenback

    The Harriman Blue Devils opened District 3-A play last week by splitting a pair of games with Greenback.

    The Blue Devils hosted the Cherokees Tuesday and dropped a 5-0 decision, but Andy Adcox's squad rebounded nicely Wednesday with a 7-5 victory at Greenback.

    Tuesday's Game

    It hasn't happened often during Andy Adcox's reign as Harriman's skipper, but the Blue Devils failed to score during Tuesday's district opener.

    While Harriman didn't score, they did have runners on base in all seven innings.

  • State funding cuts could mean closure of Roane expo center

    Roane State Community College officials are going to make tough decisions in the coming weeks — including one that might do away with a major county economic driver.

    Roane State’s Henry/Stafford East Tennessee Agricultural Exposition Center, the site of many events from horse shows to rodeos, may be shut down as a result of cuts in state spending.

  • Federal grants cut both ways

    Roane County Commissioner Ron Berry was taken aback when two U.S. Department of Homeland Security grant resolutions appeared on the budget committee agenda in December.

    “Obviously, Homeland Security has more money than they know what to do with,” he said.

    Homeland Security had a budget of $55.3 billion for fiscal year 2010.

    Despite a recession and a huge federal deficit, the agency wants even more money for fiscal year 2011, unveiling a budget request of $56.3 billion earlier this year.

  • Randolph to play for Bryan College

    Without sinking his first putt, Kingston's Jonathan Randolph has already made history for the Bryan College golf team.

    Randolph did so recently by signing scholarship papers to become a member of the first-ever golf team for the Lions.

    "I'm really happy," Randolph said. "Knowing that I'm part of their first team ever is exciting. When people look back at their first team I'll be a part of it."

  • Motorist who drove into daycare charged

    Rockwood police have charged the driver of a vehicle that crashed into a Roane County day-care center last Monday.

     Miranda Michelle Guy, 23, of 1469 Riggs Chapel Road, Harriman, has been cited for drug paraphernalia and for the violation of a code for drivers to exercise due care in conjunction with crash at The Henry Center.

  • Cherokee Middle wants own dress code

    Administrators at Cherokee Middle School want to implement a new dress code policy.

    Roane County Board of Education Member Kim Nelson said she thinks the policy goes too far.  

    “This new dress code is a complete overhaul of what this board has previously enacted,” Nelson said.

    At last week’s board meeting Nelson made a motion that the board’s policy committee take up the issue before any new policy is enacted at Cherokee.

  • Paving ends past official's driveway

    Ron Berry was appointed to the Roane County Commission on Sept. 14.

    Sometime after that, the county highway department put a fresh coat of pavement on his section of Emerald Cove Lane near Rockwood.

    A perk of office or just a coincidence? Officials contend it was the latter but have failed to provide paperwork to document their claim.

    “I came home one day, and it had been paved,” Berry said.

    Determining when that day was has proved complicated.
