  • Man dies in Harriman fire

    The Tennessee Fire Marshal’s office is assisting in the investigation of a Friday morning fatal house fire at 114 Poplar St., Harriman.

    Harriman officials said  A.J. Melton was found dead between the kitchen and living room area of his burned home.

    “They were good neighbors,” said Johnny “Sambo” Plemons, who lives next door and was among the people who reported the fire to authorities.

  • State cites TVA for leaking pond in Kingston

    TVA violated the requirements of its permit for its flue gas desulfurization stormwater pond at the Kingston Fossil Plant last fall, state officials say.

    According to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, the violations were for failing to make timely notification of a possible leak and for an unpermitted discharge.

    The flue gas desulfurization stormwater pond is occasionally called the gypsum stilling pond.

  • Kingston lands national bass tourney

    After a year of being swamped in bad publicity, Kingston and Watts Bar Lake have some good news.

    The city and the lake will be the location of The Bass Federation’s national championship in April.

    City officials announced the tournament at a recent city council meeting.

  • Haiti mission trip takes on urgency

    Rockwood residents Mark Foster and Jay Cooley were on a mission trip in Haiti when a devastating earthquake hit the country on Tuesday.

    Family members of the two Rockwood First Christian Church members said they are well and trying to get back home.

    “I got an e-mail from the U.S. Embassy,” said Kara Foster, Mark Foster's wife and pastor of Rockwood First Christian Church. “They had a message for me from him. It just said he was OK.”

  • County pumping money in 'little white house'

    Roane County Commissioner Ron Berry said his mother always told him to run when something is confusing.

    He ran away loudly during the Jan. 11 county commission meeting.

    Not enough of his colleagues ran with him to vote down a resolution that earmarks funds to renovate a white house adjacent to the new jail.

    The commission voted 11-4 to take $332,000 out of fund balance to “complete the jail, the (white) house on the corner of Third and Spring streets and the communication tower.”

  • Lady Waves top Oakdale

    After dropping a pair of games at Oakdale in November, the Midway Green Wave and Lady Waves were looking to even the score Saturday night at home and they accomplished half the feat.

    The Lady Waves opened the evening with a surprising 61-45 victory over the Lady Eagles, but Midway's boys weren't as fortunate as they dropped a 68-47 decision to the hot-shooting Eagles.

  • Spit, fire bring Houstons back to court

    Brothers Rocky and Leon Houston were back in court Monday, each with separate cases pending before Judge Jeff Wicks in General Sessions Court.

    Officers charged Rocky with assault after he allegedly spit on them during a scuffle in October 2008.

    “Are you here representing yourself, Mr. Houston, or are you going to need an attorney?” Wicks asked.

  • Houston vehicle chase case goes on a few tangents

    A brief hearing about a charge of disorderly conduct and assault against Leon Houston had just wrapped up Tuesday afternoon when deputies escorted Rocky Houston into the courtroom to deal with another matter.

    Leon and his attorney James Logan had business to discuss, but his younger brother told him it could wait.

    “Where you going?” Rocky asked.

    “He’s (Logan) wanting to talk,” Leon responded.

  • Landfill clears another hurdle

    Members of Roane County Commission’s solid waste committee don’t yet know the economic impact of allowing TVA to store fly ash in a Midtown landfill.

    They want to find out, however.

    The committee voted unanimously on Friday to recommend that County Executive Mike Farmer and County Attorney Tom McFarland enter into negotiations with TVA to study the cost and benefits of allowing fly ash to be dumped in the landfill.

  • Ash committe miffed on late notice of health study

    TVA informed a congressional subcommittee recently that it plans to contract with Oak Ridge Associated Universities to address the health concerns of local residents.

    Members of Roane County’s long term recovery committee were irked because they didn’t know about those plans.

    “We thought that we might find out maybe ahead of the game,” County Executive Mike Farmer told TVA officials Wednesday.
