  • EPA takes reins in environmental cleanup

    TVA’s expertise is power production — not disaster cleanup.

    That’s apparently why the agency is welcoming the assistance of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in cleaning up the fly ash disaster.

    “TVA recognizes this is not our expertise,” said Anda Ray, the TVA executive in charge of the cleanup. “This has never happened in the history of the world; it’s certainly hadn’t happened ever in TVA’s history.”

  • Kingston aims for fizzle-free Fourth

    Kingston’s Fourth of July celebration could be another target of the slow economy.

    “We know it’s going to be a lean year,” said Kingston parks and recreation director Rick Ross.

    However, despite tough times and the increasing cost of fireworks, Kingston has no plans to tone anything down.

    This year’s festival will actually have a few additions.

    Last year’s festival cost $49,000.

  • Sexton will remain despite Chrysler news

    Despite a recent announcement by Chrysler, things are business as usual at Sexton Automotive Group, a Harriman dealership selling Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, GMC, Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge, Jeep and Eagle.

    The dealership is on a long list of dealerships proposed to be closed by Chrysler in bankruptcy filings.

    Owner Thomas Vicary said Sexton has no plans to close its doors.

    “We’re not going anywhere,” he said.

  • Candidates seek a variety of paths for Rockwood

    In the race for Rockwood City Council, three seats are up for grabs.

    People vying for these seats are Bobby Anderson, Peggy Evans, John C. Evans, Harold Ishman, Robert Pawley, Bill Thompson and Stan Wassom.

    Issues include ways to cut costs and tighten budgets and bringing in more business and industry.

    Peggy Evans suggests looking at all aspects of a budget.

    “You can always trim a budget,” Peggy Evans said.

  • City's appearance at center of Harriman council race

    Seven candidates are hoping to be one of the people filling four seats on Harriman City Council.

    Incumbents J.D. Sampson and Chase Tedder, as well as Buddy Holley, Luther Manning and Elvis Turpin, are hoping to fill one of three full terms.

    Randy Ellis and incumbent Lonnie Wright are competing for the unexpired term of former Councilman Mark Powers.

    A popular issue in Harriman is the historic city’s appearance.

  • Updated: Constable ouster case postponed after lawyer arrested at courthouse

    An attempt to oust Roane County Constable Mark Patton from office ended in a last-minute postponement Tuesday after a scuffle between his attorney and courthouse officials.

    Lawyer Chris Cawood was taken into custody at about 9 a.m. on the first-floor landing of Roane County Courthouse during a shoving incident with a court bailiff and Constable L.K. “Butch” Barding.

  • Big changes in TVA response under EPA

    The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's new role overseeing the TVA ash spill cleanup are coming with an independent health study and a renewed sense of urgency.

    The moves were announced at a county long-term recovery board meeting struggling to deal with issues created by the disaster at TVA's Kingston Fossil Plant on Dec. 22, 2008.

  • Officials butt heads over need for jail employees, tax increase

    Officials have different opinions about the number of new employees the Roane County Sheriff’s Office needs to operate the new jail.

    The views were expressed last week during a budget committee discussion about the sheriff’s proposed jail budget for the 2009-10 fiscal year.

  • Cawood said sheriff's office violated his rights

    A public apology and $10,000.

    Those are some of the things attorney Chris Cawood asked for in a letter he addressed to Roane County Sheriff Jack Stockton.

    The overture stems from Cawood’s arrest at the courthouse last week.

    Cawood represents Constable Mark Patton. The two men entered the courthouse shortly before 9 a.m. May 19 for Patton’s ouster trial.
