  • Rockwood tops Kingston, 21-14

    The Kingston Yellow Jackets have been playing with fire to start the 2009 football season and Friday night they got burned.

    In opening the season with two victories over Harriman and Scott, the Jackets waited until their final snap on offense to score game-winning touchdowns, but there would be no magic at Rockwood as the Tigers scored the game-winning touchdown with 9:34 remaining to pick up a 21-14 victory over their county rivals.

  • Rockwood hosts Kingston in key battle

    Not every eye in Roane County will be focused on Rockwood Friday night, but a lot of attention will be paid to Civitan Field as John Webb's unbeaten Rockwood Tigers host unbeaten Kingston in what could be the game of the year in Roane County this season.

    Rockwood and Kingston, however, will not be the only game in Roane County Friday as Midway, Oliver Springs and Harriman will also play at home this week.

  • Devils down Midway, 21-14

    It might have only been the first district game of the season, but the Harriman Blue Devils picked up a huge win Friday night as Travis Tapp's squad picked up a hard fought 21-14 victory at Midway to improve to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in District 3-A.

    Harriman picked this win Friday night with a stunningly fast start in the first quarter. The Blue Devils rushed for 151 yards in the opening quarter and scored two touchdowns. Eighty-six of the yards came on a Dimitrique Inman dash to the end zone for the second touchdown of the night.

  • Devils, Wave clash highlights week 2 action

    Last Friday night was a good night for four of the five teams in Roane County as Kingston, Midway, Oliver Springs and Rockwood all picked up victories.

    While those wins were big, none came in district play, however, and that's why week two of the regular season is even bigger as all five county teams open district play.

    In District 4-AA, Kingston will try to build on last week's dramatic win over Harriman as they travel to Huntsville to take on Scott.

  • Ladd brings FCA back to Roane

    Football season is a busy time of year for Luke Ladd.

    No Ladd isn't coaching one of the many high school teams in the area. But he does spend a lot of time in the locker room and on the field speaking to Roane, Loudon and Morgan County players as part of his mission with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).

    “I tell them what God has put on my heart,” Ladd said. “I challenge the players to make good choices both on the field and off. I challenge them to choose to serve God and not the world.”

  • Gough's pass lifts Jackets past Harriman, 14-7

    There have been a lot of great players that have made a lot of great plays over the years when Harriman and Kingston get together on the gridiron. None, however, may have made two bigger plays than Kingston senior quarterback Kyle Gough.

    Last year, with Kingston trailing 18-14, Gough connected with Nathan Ladd from 36 yards for a touchdown out with 2:35 left to play and that play proved to be the game-winner in Kingston’s 20-18 victory over the Blue Devils.

  • 'Cats, Tigers scrimmage ends in tie

    Fans of the Rockwood Tigers and Oliver Springs Bobcats have spent a lot of time this preseason saying which team is better on Internet message boards and they pointed to a Thursday scrimmage at Rockwood as the measuring stick between the two teams.

    However, fans will still have to wonder as the Tigers and Bobcats battled to a 2-2 tie in varsity action wile each team added a junior varsity touchdown.

  • Uncivil discourse is best ignored

    The best thing about being an American is that built into our government system, our very core, is room for disagreement.

    “No two on earth in all things can agree,” Winston Churchill once poetically said. “All have some daring singularity.”

    What also makes America great is that our government, done right, allows plenty of room for discussion, debate and questioning.

    That is, unless the process is hijacked by people who have no interest in civil discourse, facts and learning anything.

  • Roane teams compete in jamboree

    Roane County football fans got a preview of four of the five county teams Friday evening as Oliver Springs, Harriman, Midway and Rockwood participated in the 2009 Roane County Football Jamboree played at Oliver Springs' D.J. Brittan Field.

    The news was good for the most part as Oliver Springs, Rockwood and Midway all posted shutout wins in their 20-minute quarter while Harriman and Sunbright battled to a scoreless tie in the jamboree's first varsity quarter.
