  • 'Cats battle Cougars

    The Oliver Springs Bobcats didn't win their first scrimmage of the fall at Campbell County Monday evening, but fourth year Bobcat head coach Wiley Brackett found plenty of positives to build on as his squad stood toe-to-toe with a Class 5A playoff team from 2008 in dropping a 14-7 decision.

  • BREAKING NEWS: Trucking of ash to neighboring counties to begin soon

    Trucks full of TVA fly ash will soon be emanating from Roane County to landfills in outlying areas. State officials has approved a "limited land disposal test run" beginning July 15, according to Tisha Calabrese-Benton, communications director for Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

    The test runs are to four Class I Tennessee landfills in McMinn, Loudon, Anderson/Knox and Scott counties.

  • District 3-A coaches pick Rockwood

    Another sign that football season is just around the corner was last week's release of Murphy Fair's 2009 Tennessee High School Football Preview. Every year the magazine previews all 16 districts in all three classifications in TSSAA's Division I as well as all the private schools in Division II.

    If this year's preview is correct then the Rockwood Tigers will have a great season as John Webb's squad is being picked by the District 3-A coaches as the team to beat this season.

  • And now, a little pat on the back

    We’ve been pretty critical of our state legislators this year, and, we believe, with cause.

    But we’d now like to address an area where they deserve strong praise.

    We’re talking about legislation the Tennessee General Assembly passed last year to deter the escalating crime of metal theft.

    The legislation, which went into place last fall, imposes stricter requirements on those buying and selling metal.

    Today is the day that a lot of Roane County football fans have been waiting on as practice in pads officially starts across Tennessee.

    With the start of practice it's also a good time to look at some of the biggest games on tap in Roane County this season. Like always, the battle for county bragging rights take center stage, but there are also plenty of big games outside the county borders that will determine the postseason fate of Roane County's five teams.

  • Trucking fly ash just adds to disaster's pain

    When word got out that officials were investigating possible terrorism in connection with the TVA disaster, few of us expected that there was anything to it.

    And we were right.

    However, there’s no arguing that ours has been a community hijacked by this disaster.

    Even outside the immediately impacted area, our concerns, and those of our public officials in very trying economic times, have been steered to deal with this problem.

  • Christopher named 2009 Female Athlete of the Year

    The awards just keep rolling in for former Oliver Springs basketball star Kayla Christopher.

    Christopher, who will be a freshman at Chattanooga this fall, and Webb's Faith Dupree will be honored Thursday night by the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame as the 2009 High School Female Athletes of the Year at the Hall of Fame's 28th Annual Dinner and Induction Ceremony.

    “It's a great honor,” Christopher said. “To be one of only two girls receiving this award means a lot to me.”

  • Roane seniors headed to California

    When most senior citizens travel to California it's to visit family or see Hollywood.

    For Wayne and Sydney Woodlee of Kingston and Charlie and Joyce Ingram of Rockwood, however, an August trip to San Francisco is more of a business trip as the quartet of Roane County seniors will be looking to bring home a gold medal in mixed tennis at the 2009 National Senior Olympic Games.

  • Kingston the place to be on Independence Day

    Kingston is the place to be on Saturday, July 4, as the Roane County community converges for its annual Smokin' The Water Independence Day celebration.

    Festivities get underway Saturday at 10 a.m. with the annual parade along Kentucky Street. Immediately following the parade, residents can enjoy a watermelon cutting at Ft. Southwest Point, an open car show at Roane County High School, and a motorcycle show along the Race Street dike.

  • One of the Clinton 12 remembers

    On Aug. 27, 1956, history was made in the small town of Clinton — history that would lay the ground work for the future.

    On that day, 12 high school students said a prayer and then made the long trek down Broad Street and Foley Hill to the front of Clinton High School to become the first African American students to walk through those doors.

    They were also the first black students to attend an all-white public high school in the South.
