  • Airport manager's contract gives pay raise not in final budget

    A pay raise for Rockwood Municipal Airport Manager Danny Collins wasn’t included in the city’s approved budget, but he’ll be getting the money through a recently approved amendment to his contract.

    Rockwood Vice Mayor Peggy Evans made the motion to raise Collins’ salary from $35,000 to $39,800. Councilwoman Jane Long seconded it.

    Councilman Jason Jolly was the lone vote against it.

  • Webb planning a Vietnam vets park memorial

    Visitors to Harriman Riverfront Park often stop at the fountain and war memorial dedicated to those from Roane County who lost their lives during battle.

    David Webb, the park’s namesake, and others are working to add more to that tribute to the solders who died in service to their country.

    Webb recently told Harriman City Council about a plan to put a replica of the Vietnam War statue featuring three servicemen that is so well known near the Vietnam War Memorial Wall in the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

  • Gifts help Imagination Library, ministry

    Volunteer Energy Cooperative’s VECustomers Share program recently awarded $2,500 in grants to Roane County community service organizations Roane Imagination Library Inc. and Luminary United Methodist Church's School Backpack Committee.

    VECustomers Share, founded in October 2001, has donated more than $3.8 million to various community-service organizations. It is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charitable organization covering the cooperative’s 17-county service area.

    Roane County Chamber of Commerce member Vintage Salon at 700 N. Gateway Ave., Rockwood, recently had a grand-opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony.

    Owners Wendy and Brenda Garrett offer hairstyling for women and men, manicures and pedicures.

  • Rockwood stumbles in final scrimmage

    With less than a week to go before the start of the 2011 season, Rockwood head coach John Webb was hoping the Tigers final preseason scrimmage against Coalfield and Stone Memorial would show his squad was ready for a trip to Sequoyah Friday night. That didn't happen, however, as the Tigers still have work to do after failing to score and giving up three total touchdowns to the Panthers and Yellow Jackets.
