  • Kingston moving toward energy conservation committee

    Kingston City Council is taking steps to establish an energy conservation committee.

    The idea was first mentioned by Councilman Brant Williams at a council workshop this month.

    The city is already in the process of getting TVA to conduct an energy audit of all city buildings.

    According to parks and recreation director Rick Ross, this process could take several months.

    TVA would come in and examine all buildings, like looking at light fixtures, and make a recommendation to the city.

  • Candidates respond to questions from callers, emailers, panelists

    Election Day is quickly approaching and candidates are working feverishly to win over undecided voters.

    Candidates running or state senate in the 12th Senatorial District are no different.

    Democrat Becky Ruppe and Republican Ken Yager have met in towns throughout the district facing questions from voters, panels and most recently listeners of WECO’s Political Spotlight.

  • Sams carries load in Kingston win

    Kingston’s James Sams rushed for 226 yards and three TDs on 20 carries Friday night in leading the Kingston Yellow Jackets to a 41-21 Region 2-AAA victory over the Scott Highlanders.

  • Midway picks up playoff spot with with over Harriman

    The playoff scenario for Region 2-A began to clear up somewhat following Midway’s 21-9 win over county rival Harriman last Friday night at Midway.

    Although Harriman dropped to 1-3 in region play after the loss to Midway, the Blue Devils can still claim fourth place and a playoff berth with wins over Coalfield and Oakdale or a victory over Coalfield and an Oakdale loss to Sunbright Friday night.

    Midway’s scenario is a little murkier, but they did claim a spot in the play-offs with the win over Harriman.

  • Houston's behavior a concern for court

    Rocky Houston’s behavior was a topic once again during a pretrial hearing on Friday.

    “Your conduct in court is of great concern,” Special Judge James “Buddy” Scott told him.

    Rocky’s conduct is also a concern outside the courtroom.

    After allegedly scuffling with officers after a hearing on Oct. 10, Rocky entered Roane County Criminal Court wearing a mesh spit mask with his hands shackled behind his back.

  • Kirkham, Robinette feud lands before grand jury

    District Attorney General Russell Johnson plans to take the results of several investigations regarding Roane County Property Assessor Teresa Kirkham and Steven Robinette before the grand jury on Tuesday.

    Johnson has extended an invitation for Kirkham, Robinette and their attorneys to attend the grand jury meeting.

  • Sports career cut short by shaving cream revived 53 years later

    Fifty-three years ago, Ken Mink was gearing up for his sophomore basketball season at a Kentucky junior college when he was expelled from school.

    Mink professed innocence in the vandalism of his coach’s office, but it would not matter.

    His dream of playing college basketball skidded to a halt.

    Now Mink is getting a second chance to finish what he started.

    The 73-year-old from Knoxville is playing basketball for Roane State Community College.

  • Ethics committee hands one off to district attorney general

    The decision on whether property assessor Teresa Kirkham did anything wrong on her expense reporting could come from the district attorney general’s office.

    Following the advice of County Attorney Tom McFarland, the Roane County Ethics Committee decided that two ethics complaints filed against Kirkham should be turned over to District Attorney General Russell Johnson for further investigation.
