    After dropping their region opener against Greenback, Travis Tapp’s Harriman Blue Devils couldn’t afford a second loss at Sunbright Friday night if they wanted to remain in the hunt for the regular season Region 2-A title.

  • Alcoa whirls past OS, 62-0

    Alcoa proved Friday night why they are perennially one of Class AA’s elite teams with a 62-0 win over the Oliver Springs Bobcats.

    Alcoa jumped out to an early lead with 7:11 to go in the opening quarter with Chase James connecting with Sam Thompson from 45 yards out, finishing out a four-play, 68-yard drive.

    Derrick Brodus hit the PAT to give the Tornadoes an early 7-0 lead.

  • Hendersoon to make trip to Germany with Bredesen delegation

    A trip to Germany will give Roane County’s top industrial recruiter the chance to network with Volkswagen, which is building a plant in Chattanooga.

    Roane Alliance president Leslie Henderson will be heading to Europe this month as part of a trade delegation with Gov. Phil Bredesen.

    Roane is trying to lure companies that supply the automobile industry and are expected to locate in areas around the factory.

  • Man of steel: self-taught blacksmith forges ahead

    Some young people unwind in Internet chat rooms or with video games.

    Dillion Alley takes a different track in his off-time — one involving heat, soot and steel.

    The 20-year-old was fascinated by the blacksmith craft, and he decided to give it a try a year ago.

    Alley works in a rustic shed he built himself. He uses a concrete bowl, called a fire pot, as part of his forge and a blow-dryer-driven contraption his bellows.

  • Cherokee, OS face off; Jackets win

    For 31:13 Monday night, the Cherokee Yellow Jackets and Oliver Springs Bobcats played a memorable contest as the Jackets scored with 47.1 seconds to play to take a 20-14 lead.

    The final 47 seconds, however, will also be remembered, but not necessarily for the quality of play.

  • Mistakes doom Eagles

    OAKDALE-The scoreboard didn't come close to telling the story of Oakdale's 34-14 loss to Jackson County on Hollis Eble Field Friday night.

    Oakdale (1-4) out gained the Blue Devils (3-3) by 190 total yards, but 191 yards in penalties and four turnovers doomed the Eagles in their homecoming game. The yellow flags cost the Eagles a touchdown and a player (Jonathan Mathis) in addition to plenty of momentum during the second half.

  • Sunbright starts up cross country team

    The idea originated at Peak Performance Rehabilitation, Inc. this summer. Sean Galloway was working with Sunbright cheerleader & basketball player Hannah Sexton, and he found out she had great ability as a runner. Galloway then put the plan together to start a cross country team at Sunbright High School.

    The plan worked and Sunbright became the first school in Morgan County to field a cross country team.

  • Harriman MS tops Wartburg

    The Harriman Middle School Blue Devils ran their season record to 4-3 overall with an exciting 20-14 victory at Wartburg.

    Thursday’s contest with the Bulldogs was a seesaw affair as Harriman scored the first touchdown of the game and then the last two to pick up the six-point victory.

    Most of the scoring came in the first half as the two teams battled their way to a 14-14 tie at intermission.

  • Harriman police make arrests for meth making

    A Roane Medical Center-owned building on Roane Street was quarantined after Harriman Police found chemicals associated with the manufacture of methamphetamine in the basement on Friday.

    It had a 5-gallon glass jar containing the liquid components of methamphetamine, said Harriman Police Chief Randy Heidle.

    Those flammable components had begun to form a gas, he said.
