  • Governor touts long-term care initiative during Kingston stop

    Gov. Phil Bredesen was in Kingston on Wednesday to discuss new changes in long-term care, which will be the addition of more choices in home-and community-based services.

    The changes come in the form of a new law called the Long Term Community Choice Act of 2008 signed by Bredesen in June.

    “It gives families a lot more options,” Bredesen said.

    The act restructures the long-term care system and the way funds are spent, offering more than simply nursing home care.

  • Roane teams gear up for region play

    The first two weeks of the season have been great as county rivalries and non region contests have got football fans back in the groove. Now, however, it's time to turn it up a notch as region play starts Friday night for Kingston, Midway and Rockwood, and all three teams would like nothing more than to exit Friday night at the top of their respective region standings.

    In Region 2-A, Craig Moser's Midway Green Wave will look to take the first step in defending their region title when they travel to Oakdale.

  • Young Jackets even record with win over Wartburg

  • OS girls edge Alcoa, 2-1

    The Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats soccer team evened their season record at 1-1 last week with a 2-1 victory at Alcoa.

    Oliver Springs did all of their damage in the first half of play as the Lady 'Cats led 2-0 at halftime and then John Roberts' squad held off the Lady Tornadoes in the second half.

    Oliver Springs' first goal of the night was scored when foreign exchange student Julia Hombach found the back of the net in the 15th minute.

    Katie Harvey picked up the assist for Oliver Springs.

  • OS youths sweep Wartburg

    The Oliver Springs Bobcats got out their brooms Saturday and swept the Wartburg Bulldogs in Little League action at Wartburg’s John R. Dillon Field.

    In the crickets game, the Bobcats won 28-0. The halftime score was 14-0 with the Bobcats adding eight more points in the third quarter with one more touchdown coming in the fourth quarter.

    Caden Armes had a pair of touchdowns for the ‘Cats along with Blake Crass and Mason Hill. Tanner Stombaugh had a fumble recovery and Fisher Ely had a great game as well.

  • 'Dogs win 'Hoot Bowl'

    WARTBURG — Jim Gibson would have been proud.

    The late Gibson, a former Coalfield and Wartburg football coach who was known for defense, would have loved being involved in Wartburg’s hard-earned 13-0 victory over the Jackets Friday night.

    It was the Bulldogs first time getting to secure the ‘Hoot Bowl’ trophy, in honor of Jim ‘Hoot’ Gibson. The trophy has been given to the winning team in this game since the 2006 season.

  • Hall gaining experience in the Can-Am League

    Nate Hall has been playing baseball most of his life. He has had success every step up the way on the diamond.

    Hall, a Coalfield resident, is currently getting a shot at the professional ranks, as he plays for the Ottawa Rapidz of the Can-Am League.

    He started playing when he was 7 years old with the undefeated dreaded black team at Coalfield in major t-ball. He would move on to play travel ball in Knoxville as a 9-year old.

  • Rugby gets grant to build heirloom greenhouse

    Rural Development Area Director Jerry Amonett and Historic Rugby, Inc. Executive Director Barbara Stagg today announced a federal investment of $25,000 to fund an agri-tourism and conservation project based on the distinctive history of Morgan County. The event took place at Rugby Visitors Center.
