  • Property assessor's attorney says law calls for affidavit

    The Roane County Ethics Committee ground to a halt Thursday night in its discussion of several complaints filed against Property Assessor Teresa Kirkham.

    The reason was questions about whether complainants needed a signed affidavit attached to their complaints, a question raised by Kirkham’s attorney, J. Polk Cooley.

    Cooley contended rules for the Tennessee Ethics Commission require a signed affidavit. He believes that mandate is also applicable to the county entity.

  • Lady Cat slugger signs with Roane State

    If a poll had been taken among Roane County softball teams about who was the best hitter in 2008, Oliver Springs’ Ellie Morgan would have most certainly been at or near the top of the list. Now the former Lady ‘Cat will be doing her damage close to home as the hard-hitting C/3B signed scholarship papers Tuesday afternoon with Roane State Community College.

  • Mystery industry coming to Harriman?

    >Harriman may be close to recruiting an industry to locate in what is referred to as the Harriman industrial park.

    Mayor Chris Mason recently updated the city council on an industry that has expressed interest in coming to the area. He said industry representatives contacted him about plans to send a letter of intent to purchase the property from the city.

  • Leon Houston gets new trial date

    Houston brothers Leon and Rocky have a history of being close, but that didn’t sway a judge this week on their request to be tried together for murder.

    The Houstons were at the Roane County Courthouse Tuesday on a variety of motions — including one to retry Leon when Rocky is tried for murder in November.

    Both men are charged with first-degree murder in the 2006 shooting deaths of Roane County Sheriff’s Deputy Bill Jones and his friend and ride-along passenger Mike Brown.

  • Harriman speeds by Stone

    Speed kills.

    That was the moral of the scrimmage between the Harriman Blue Devils and the Stone Memorial Panthers Friday as Harriman made short work of Stone Memorial by a 4-2 margin.

    “I thought tonight we picked up our intensity and we played better than we did Tuesday against Sequoyah,” stated Harriman head coach Travis Tapp. “We also got to play a lot of kids tonight and we even had four of our freshmen in the scrimmage with our varsity team at one point.”

  • Coalfield steps up in 3-way

    ROCKWOOD - Coalfield started off slow, but ended with a bang at Rockwood during a three-way scrimmage against Rockwood and Pigeon Forge last Thursday evening.

    In varsity work, Coalfield earned a 1-0 win over Class AAA Pigeon Forge and ended up with a 2-2 stalemate against Class AA Rockwood.

    First-year head coach Keith Henry likes the direction his Coalfield team is headed after a couple of scrimmages under their belt.

  • Oakdale roster nearly doubles

    OLIVER SPRINGS-Oakdale has made up a lot of ground in the past two weeks since Randy Miller took over the reigns of the Eagle football program.

    With only 15 or 16 kids during the first few days of practice, less than two weeks later the numbers have grown to nearly 30. Oakdale also performed pretty well against Class AA Oliver Springs as the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie last Friday in a pre-season scrimmage.

  • Ruppe-Yager campaign heating up

    While one campaign season has ended, others are about to crank up.

    Not only is this a presidential election year, but there’s also a heated state senate campaign on the horizon.

    Republican Ken Yager and Democrat Becky Ruppe are running to fill the 12th District state senate seat being vacated by Tommy Kilby.

    The two candidates stumped through Roane County last Thursday, even though they were unopposed in the state primary.

    Some pundits say the race has the potential to turn bitter.

  • Four airlifted from Rockwood wreck

    An automobile accident Monday had Rockwood beach looking more like a busy helicopter landing zone.

    Four people were airlifted to the hospital following a single-car accident on New Hope Road between 8 and 8:30 p.m.

    Officials say two men and two women were airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center by three different helicopters at nearby Rockwood Beach.
