  • UPDATE: Judge allows Leon Houston to withdraw sequestering request

    Not wanting to be a burden to the taxpayers, Leon Houston has withdrawn his request to have the jury sequestered in his double murder trial. James Logan, Leon's lead attorney, told Judge James “Buddy” Scott about his client's change of heart during a hearing in Roane County Criminal Court on Monday.

    “Mr. Houston has expressed his confidence in the people of Roane County,” Logan said. “He does not want to inconvenience the people or the taxpayers in any shape, form or fashion.”

  • Oliver Springs man charged with murder

    An Oliver Springs man is behind bars at the Roane County Jail on first-degree murder charges. According to the sheriffs office, Ricky Patterson allegedly stabbed David Lowe sometime around 5 p.m. on Saturday at a home on Quarry Road. Lowe, 50, was later pronounced dead at Roane Medical Center.

  • Kingston wins in marathan game

    The Oak Ridge All-Stars gave Kingston all they wanted and then some in the Dixie Youth AA sub-district tournament, but in the end the Jackets survived and picked up the tournament championship with a winner-take-all 15-12 victory in extra innings.

    Wednesday’s title game was actually the second nail-biter of the day played between the two teams and third in three days.

  • Kreis era ends at Coalfield

    A coaching era is over at Coalfield. Garry Kreis has hung up the whistle after nearly 30 years of roaming the sidelines for the Yellow Jackets.

    Kreis helped put Coalfield football on the map during the last 21 seasons as head coach. He finished with 165 wins, 18 trips to the playoffs, half-a-dozen district/region championships (1990, 91, 94, 95, 2005, 06), and a dozen Morgan County titles to leave his mark on the Tennessee high school football scene. He also served as an assistant at Coalfield from 1979-1986.

  • Coalfield hoops camp held at P.J.

    The 2008 Coalfield basketball camp hit the road this year. With construction and work being done at Coalfield School, camp director Carmen Hines had to change the game plan and was able to move the camp to Petros-Joyner School.

    "We had to move it out to P.J., so we were dealing with some smaller circumstances as far as room and stuff. I'm thankful to all of them down at Petros-Joyner. Mr. Treece and Miss Julie really helped me out a lot so I could pull it off and have camp there," said Hines.

  • Roane teams bow out of A sub-district play

    The two Roane County teams participating in the Dixie Youth A sub-district tournament at Kingston were eliminated from further play Monday night as Kingston dropped a 16-12 decision to Caryville while Rockwood lost to Spring City, 17-8.

    Roane County, however, still has one team still alive in the division as Harriman will be hosting the Dixie Youth District 8 Tournament that starts Friday.
