  • GLIMPSES from a Teacher Historian: We, too, will survive our times

    By MARK BANKER

Tragically, a bad week for our nation might be a good week for an opinion columnist.

Surely with yet another tragic school shooting, alleged incontrovertible proof of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, and yet another showdown between right-wing extremists and their critics in Knoxville, any writer worth his laptop can reflect and compose a relevant column.

  • GOING with the FLO: Eliminating God’s word ends nation He protects

We have endured hysterical talking points from those few in the top levels of the FBI who took an unverified and salacious dossier to secret court to get a secret warrant to spy on a fellow American without telling the court who paid for it and the political ramifications.

  • A VIEW from LICK SKILLET: Crump on Trump? If the shoe fits, put it on!

Gentle reader, if you are a long-time reader, you know that we have been much concerned with the religious right, or evangelical element, and their attitude towards President Trump. Many of them seem to have reverted to the ancient concept of divine right of rulers, and believe that Mr. Trump was not only elected, but was divinely anointed, to rule over us, as was believed by royalists in centuries long gone by.

  • GOING with the FLO: Filth and immorality have permeated our society

America is rotting from within because we’ve put corruptible characters in office. Filth and immorality have permeated our society.

While watching the drama of the FISA memo, I was reminded of what most of us have forgotten. We must listen to those who are in authority! I don’t listen to anyone who isn’t under authority.

  • A VIEW from LICK SKILLET: Treason not to applaud Trump? Lincoln & ‘Dixie’

Gentle reader, as you know, the usual gestation period for the genus homo sapiens is nine months. We have now entered a parallel period of similar length for the gestation of the re-birth of America, or of her death.

That is, in just under nine months we will have the 2018 Congressional elections whereat all the members of the House of Representatives, and one-third of the Senate will be elected. These elections will be a referendum on the current Republican Government, i.e. the President, the House, and the Senate.

  • From the EDITOR’S Desk: Fiction appears to imitate truth

I’ve always believed the best way to understand what is going on is to hear it from different perspectives. That’s why I like to listen to different news sources.

The differences between outlets such as ABC, CBS NBC and CNN used to be subtle, but if you listened close you might pick up a fact here or there that one of the other outlets missed.

Lately, however, it amazes me how different teams of professional journalists can view the same event through such different perspectives.

  • A VIEW from LICK SKILLET: A fond farewell to newly departed friends

Well, dear reader, you are not going to read what the old curmudgeon wrote for you to read. For this he is sorry, but ‘t’sn’t his fault. You see, slave to duty that he is, despite having put in a tiring day this Tuesday past, he retired to his work room and took up the tools of his trade, i.e. the keyboard of his trusty Apple Mackintosh desk-top computer, and as was once the common descriptive parlance for feverish composition — Let ‘er Rip!

  • Guest Column: TNReady reports valuable for all

    By Amy Barbra

    For Roane County News

This year, I started my 11th year of teaching. I love my job and believe with all my heart that I have been called to do it.

I love that feeling you get when you see your students achieve a hard-earned goal.

Let me give you an example: One of my favorite students so far has been Eric. Eric came to me struggling academically. He had a lot of obstacles to overcome, but I saw so much potential.

  • GLIMPSES from a Teacher Historian: Historical analogies can be blinding

    By MARK BANKER

Last week’s announcement that longtime Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones had been elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame was a pleasant diversion from other news.

But for this news junkie, historian and Braves fan, Chipper’s story offers a cautionary tale about learning from history. It, in turn, lends needed perspective on that other news.

  • GOING with the FLO: He’s President Trump, not President Perfect

With all the emergencies around our country and abroad, we need to be focused on the progress our president has made. He works many hours a day and well into the night to keep us on the right track and to Make America Great Again.

The Dow had an 8,000 growth last week. That’s a 31-percent increase. This hasn’t happened since FDR. This helps everyone.
