Letters

  • Having differing opinions voiced perfectly all right

Clearly Randy Martens is a liberal. The world can see this by the way he starts his self-righteous letter with an attack on people he does not agree with or do something he doesn’t like.

His attack on the Roane County News and Flo Charles is just wrong and clearly with this letter he hopes to push the Roane County News to stop publishing Flo Charles.

  • Honor and respect will come when earned, deserved

Your Friday columnist asks, “What happened to honor and respect in our country?” Maybe I can help. You only need go back to the year 2000 to find out.

During the turmoil after the 2000 election, the Supreme Court of the United States illegally stopped the counting of votes in Florida and selected the next President of the United States by a 5-to-4 vote. The SCOTUS vote was along party lines according to the political party of the POTUS that had appointed the nine judges.

  • Columnist pleas to support president misguided at best

Shame on the Roane County News! Your new guest columnist, Flo Charles, is nothing more than a religious zealot!

You have recently made the comment that her rantings are published to offset those of Gerald Largen ... baloney! While Largen is most certainly a liberal, he is not an unleashed attack dog. He is a legitimate historian who writes with the best interests of the community at heart. While quite wordy at times, he does not spout the word storms of hate that seem to be the specialty of Charles.

  • Gee whiz, that’s a lot of tiger urine over 20 years

After hearing that Russell Johnson, District Attorney General, is disturbed by some of the things he’s heard about the health concerns from workers at the ash spill, here are some of my concerns about the effect of breathing cat urine for the last 20 years.

Cat urine produces ammonia which, when inhaled in large amounts, leads to cellular destruction by disrupting lipids in the cell membrane. Levels greater than 25 parts per million cause nausea, headaches and lightheadedness.

  • Our public libraries are treasures in our community

On Thursday, July 20, at the Kingston Public Library, a small group of us were treated to a wonderful lecture and discussion led by Connie Jordan Green, a local authority on Appalachian literature, as well as being a published author and award winning in poetry and other genre.

Ms. Green is also currently an active teacher in Oak Ridge Institute of Continued Learning through Roane State.

On this particular evening, attention was given to two specific works: “River of Earth” by James Still and “The Tall Woman” by Wilma Dykeman.

  • Can’t stand with the president? Sit in the corner

Clyde Pedigo making a rebuttal to “Going with the Flo” proves to all that his public education is lacking.

It does not take much research today to find out that Horace Mann is considered the Father of Public Education in America, a member of the Whig Party, a party that “advocated the rule of law, written and unchanging constitution.” That does not sound very liberal or progressive to me, I’m pretty sure they advocate for a living constitution that changes whenever they feel the need.

  • Lots of folks helped make Golf Classic a great success

Michael Dunn Center would like to thank everyone who made the 19th Annual Golf Classic at Fox Den a success. The continuous support we receive from donors, area businesses and individuals allows us to continue our mission of empowering individuals with disabilities and challenges to gain independence.

We would like to specifically thank the following: All of the golfers who participated in the event, the volunteers who made the day run so smoothly, and the sponsors listed below who make the day possible:

  • It’s past time to do something about dangerous spot

Unfortunately, it has finally happened: a fatal accident at the Pilot Gas Station on Lawnville Road.

I have been saying that someone was going to get killed or severely injured at or around the entrance/exit to the Pilot, ever since the Pilot took over the station and turned it into a mini truck stop.

The entrance/exit, in conjunction to the Interstate 40 exit and entrance ramps, is hazardous as to how it is configured.

  • Comments in column wrong and offensive

I would like to make a rebuttal to last Fridays “Going with the Flo” columnist’s comments. Not only are they wrong, they are offensive!

    She wrote:

    1. “Liberals see no connection between values, education, the moral health of our nation and America’s security and prosperity.”

    2. “They train our young to criticize America, not celebrate it.”

    3. “They ban ... the Ten Commandments, but encourage ... the teachings of the Koran.”

  • Nall’s views made sense; future of our county is at stake

Thank you for your wisdom in printing Earl Nall’s message in the Roane County News. Yes, it was quite long, BUT it makes more sense than anything else I have read about school consolidation.

Whatever we name them, it would certainly help the future of our county. Yes, our taxes will go up, but at least it will be for a good reason.
