  • Snakes alive! Panic no option after reptile intrusion

We had a visitor recently, one that was neither invited nor expected.
It was of the reptilian types, 5 feet long and slim with a mottled gray and black skin. It seems the storm door that has recently been closing slowly, and sometimes not completely, left just the right amount of space for it to slither into our living room.
I saw its tail disappearing as I reached for the door to enter.
“Snake!” I warned, and stepped gingerly into the house. There it was on the hardwood floor, looking around as if to choose which room to inhabit.

  • Support for golf tourney helps educate youth

On Saturday, June 8, the Avery Trace Chapter, Daughter of the American Revolution, held its 4th Annual Flag Day Golf Tournament at Southwest Point Golf Course.

The DAR promotes patriotism within our local schools and community, supports our military active duty as well as our veterans and educates American youth in the history of our great country.

  • Is ship-of-state adrift? Can ‘captain’ sail to safe waters?

As our ship of state sails away from ill-advised foreign entanglements, her hull battered and holed, her crew war weary, bloodied and ill-paid, the captain scans the distant shore for safe harbor — a place to mend her wounds and bind up shattered sails.

  • Swift apology wanted for Largen’s tea party attack

My usual policy regarding Gerald Largen’s columns is to ignore them as a waste of time and a danger to healthy brain cells, but when he attacks me or my Roane County Tea Party associates directly, as he did last Friday, I reluctantly wade into his ramblings.

The silver lining in this whole IRS debacle has been the fact that some people who had formerly put complete trust in the righteousness of an all-powerful central government have had their eyes opened to what happens in the real world when real people are given too much power over their fellow citizens.

  • Leadership view depends on your own direction

The conciliatory effects of the presidential oval office meetings with Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham have disappeared like fog at sunrise.

A new chill has settled over their relationships as our most vocal war POW/hero accuses President Obama of a failure to lead.

What he is failing to notice is that the president is leading in the opposite direction McCain currently advocates, and away from continual war — not into the Syrian civil war quicksand.

How could entering another proxy war in the Middle East help the United States?

  • Told HIPAA was why dog could not be found

My husband and I have been supporters of the Roane County Animal Shelter for several years, both donating monetarily and adopting three pets from the facility.
The last pet we adopted, about a year ago, was a robust and active Lab-mix puppy.
He is a handful of happiness and love but after a few months we found it difficult to keep him home.
We live in the county and he loved to roam the woods and follow the other dogs through the yard.

  • Letter not a lie, writer says, but instead a typo

I am responding to the individual who questioned the validity of the statements on the Background Check bill that failed in the Senate in my letter that ran May 3.  The only mistake that I made was listing the section as 922 when the proper section was 122(t)(4).  I have copied the exact wording as it is written.  It obviously it does not name Eric Holder in the section of the bill as it needs to apply to whoever the attorney general is at any given time.  The following is the exact wording:

  • Fire victims thank community

On March 29, we suffered a severe fire at our home on Blue Heron Way, Ten Mile. Our family would like to take this opportunity to thank the Roane County and neighboring fire departments, police officers and emergency squads for their experience, compassion and advice.
We would also like to thank the Half Moon Shores community; Blue Springs Marina; Watts Bar Community Service Group; Knoxville Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center; and the various churches, family and friends for their overwhelming support and generosity throughout this terrible experience.

  • Lies in letters should be caught
  • Greenway project a boondoggle, says Kingston writer

The construction of sidewalks to nowhere (Kingston greenway project) with public tax funds (state gas tax dollars) in a private residential development (Ladd Landing) to help sell building lots was never a good idea.

Now it’s gotten worse as the price tag soars — $1.5 million and counting.

Add that to the $2-million Taj Mahal  — unneeded new Kingston City Hall  — and it’s easy to understand why our political ruling class has never seen a tax increase they didn’t like.
