  • Rockwood finance issues bring up several questions

    I was just responding to the article about Rockwood’s finances.

    If they’re having money problems, why are they eliminating one person’s salary and then increasing somebody else’s by $13,000.

    Who is Becky Ruppe?

    Where did she come from?

    Why does she deserve a $13,000 increase after a couple of months on the job?

    What are her personal finances like?

    Probably the most important question is, who does she know to get this job?

  • Peggy Evans is about honesty, integrity, service

    The recent letter about Peggy Evans was written in a sophmoric manner (conceited; overconfident of knowledge) and poorly informed.

    The diatribe was prolonged and bitter and had to have been based on ignorance of the contributions of Dr. Tom Evans, his wife, Peggy, and their entire family, who are longtime Roane Countians.

    Dr. Bert Cunningham and I have known Dr. Tom and Peggy before they completed undergraduate studies at Carson-Newman medical school and through years of service since we moved here in 1961.

  • Secret money altering the vote in our country

    There’s a flood of secret money now in American politics.

    Unlike a real flood, though, we can’t tell where this money’s coming from.

    That’s because corporations, unions, lobbyists and special interests can now spend millions to get the elected officials they want into power.

    And right now, the law lets them do that in complete secrecy.

    U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander and U.S. Sen. Bob Corker can make things right.

    Senators, tell us you’ll lead the fight to stop the secret money.

  • Thank you from folks at Roane Co. United Way

    Roane County United Way would like to thank everyone who participated in and those who attended our recent Family Fun Day.  

    We had more than 40 agencies and businesses partake in this day.  More than 250 people came out to enjoy a day of music, food, and fun.  

    A special thanks to Roane State Community College for allowing UT LIFESTAR to be a part of our day, and thank you to David Maupin of East Roane County Volunteer Fire Department for ensuring a safe landing!

  • Group grateful for help from Rockwood 2000

    Ridge View Elementary School fifth grade would like to thank Rockwood 2000 for the organization’s generous donation that provided our transportation on a recent field trip.   

    The students visited the University of Tennessee campus in Knoxville.  

    While on campus, the students supported our school’s 4-H Clover Bowl team and toured several of the buildings.

  • Battery warranty situation better if you shop around

    The manufacturers’ pro-rata warranty for lead acid batteries, for as long as I can remember, has been, with a few exceptions, a consumer rip off.

    That has finally been proven in a class-action lawsuit against Johnson Controls, a company that purchased Globe Union some years ago, one of the largest manufacturers of lead acid batteries in the world.

    Johnson Controls, like Globe Union had, distributes batteries that will be marketed under different labels, including a number of very popular ones.

  • Religious beliefs shouldn’t be basis of president vote

    We, as a nation, are nearing the time to elect a president to represent us all.

    This time we have a unique religious twist as the Republican candidate appears to be Mitt Romney who is a devout member of the Mormon Latter-day Saints faith.

    It goes without needing to be said that there will be a certain number of voters whom are of other faiths or none at all, who will not vote for Romney because of this, even though they may otherwise agree with his nonreligious beliefs.

  • CASA 5k run was big success for all those involved

    CASA of the 9th Judicial District’s 2012 Run for the Child was a big success.

    We had 220 entrants, a huge increase from last year, and preliminary numbers indicate we will net about $2,000 more than last year, making this the biggest fundraiser in our history.

  • Intolerance has no place on pages of newspaper

    Those of us who avidly read the editorial section of this newspaper surely take note of the religious intolerance has once more raised its ugly head on these pages.

    Various branches of Christianity taking shots at one another is sadly a part of our history, spanning the last 2,000 years.

    More disconcerting is the notion that one would be considered ignorant for having  any sort of faith in a higher power, a view that is becoming rampant across the more socialist and “educated” parts of this world.
