More than 40 years ago, I was lucky enough to land in East Tennessee. I soon learned that Tennessee is the Volunteer State. I liked that then, and I like it even more so now. Volunteers do things on principle, often at considerable inconvenience or risk.

A man much in the news who is not from Tennessee, but nevertheless has demonstrated moral courage over and over again is our president, Barack Obama.

If I come to Harriman for a visit and need to get a prescription filled at the drug store, what is the one main thing I’ll need? Photo ID.

Wait, wait! If I’m elderly, minority, disabled or other couch-potato 99 percent, is this not discrimination?

If I want to buy Sudafed, get on a plane, do banking, see a doctor or even, gentle reader, get a library card what do I need? So what’s the biggie-boo about having photo ID to vote?

The residents of Roane County have again demonstrated their great generosity by their support of the Kingston Lions pancake breakfast on March 31. More than 200 people attended. We thank them and the many people who purchased tickets as a contribution.  
We also thank Kingston Food City, Kroger, Piggly Wiggly, Reily Foods (JFG), United Grocery Outlet and Walmart for donating, or providing at reduced cost, the materials used for the breakfast so that our financial income was maximized.  

I have decided to write this letter to allow the readers of this newspaper to better understand the pain families deal with because of the negligence of some doctors here and elsewhere who prescribe pain killers as if they are handing out vitamins.

Most people do not know who these local doctors are, but those of us who have a family member who has become an addict know.

Law enforcement knows.
