  • Winter Blast a success thanks to contributors

    CASA’s first Winter Blast was a great success, raising more than $18,000 to help train and support our volunteer court-appointed special advocates. These volunteers are appointed by our juvenile courts to investigate and advocate for the needs of abused and neglected children.

    Many individuals and organizations contributed to the success: sponsors who helped to offset the costs, in-kind donors who provided services and prizes, and the many who bought raffle tickets and came out to see Jimmy Wayne and enjoy the festivities.

  • Kim Jong Un — and why isolation isn’t the answer

    Kim Jong Un is playing the same poker his father played: Do something dramatic and half-crazy to gain attention and bribes from those governments whose leaders fear he will attack south, or worse, unleash an atomic warheads on Japan or South Korea.

    Declaring the armistice null and void is dramatic and causes concern about his rationality, but such ploys have worked many times before, and in his mind, it will work again.

  • Crowded jails? Common sense answer is here

    Gerald Largen’s “I told you so” column on on the jailhouse situation (Friday, March 8) proved that he has the uncanny ability to discern the future without ever having lived there.

    Some would call this ability clairvoyance. However by using that power or by transitting a time portal, he was able to accurately predict that the new jailhouse would not achieve incarceratorial nirvana.

  • Great things are made possible by pancakes

    The Rotary Club of Kingston hosted its annual pancake breakfast and silent auction on Feb. 2.  

    More than 300 people were served, and folks enjoyed wonderful food and visited with friends and neighbors in this annual tradition.

  • Thanks to Aytes for helping with school safety

    I am a school bus driver for Roane County Schools, and I would like to take the time to thank our new director of schools, Gary Aytes, for helping to keep the children and bus drivers safe.  

    I have driven for Roane County schools for seven years.  

    At the beginning of the school year, Aytes was there to welcome us and let us know how much he appreciated what we did.  

    He also came by a few weeks ago while we had our bus certification and did the same.

  • School safety meetings need your input

    I am writing today as one member of your school board and as a retired police officer. I want to inform you of the progress through the cooperative effort of the Roane County Board of Education, the County Commission, local county and municipal law enforcement agencies, and the Roane County Office of Emergency Services concerning the safety of your children at school.
    Your children are safer at school than anywhere else in the nation, including your own homes.

  • Post-tourney glare not professional principal behavior

    I work with WBNT radio in Oneida.

    Three of us from our station did a live broadcast of the region semi-final girl’s basketball game between Oneida and Grace Christian at Harriman High School.

    First off, let me say what a great job Harriman High School did as a whole taking care of our needs at the game this past Monday. When we arrived, we had tables and chairs ready for us and the hospitality room was fantastic and very well organized.

  • Contributions made health fair solid success

    The health fair held on Feb. 18 at Luminary United Methodist Church in Ten Mile provided services to 155 people, who received more than 480 medical screenings.

    Many people and groups deserve thanks for contributing to this successful and valuable event.

  • These dronezzz are bigger threat to our society

    The  guest opinion article by Gene Policinski in the Feb. 22 edition of Roane County news gave an overview of the spread of “drone” technology and its possible uses against American citizens.

    Violation of First Amendment rights was an expressed concern should our own government authorities use this technology improperly.

  • Forefathers couldn’t imagine weaponry future

    Oh, yes, the problem of gun control rears its ugly head yet again.
    I am totally for the Second Amendment to our Constitution.
    Yes, I should have a handgun to protect myself and family.
    Yes, everyone should have a rifle if they want to hunt game. (I love venison with potatoes, carrots and onions, but I could never shoot a deer).
