  • Technology Center has happy secret you should know

    I recently donated a computer to the Tennessee Technology Center in Roane County.  

    I met with Sheila Hicks, the business office secretary for the school, who informed me that Tennessee Technology had a full cosmetology department where they do hair color ($10), manicures ($6), pedicures ($9), facials ($6), haircuts ($6) — and the list goes on.   

    Both men and women in the community are encouraged to come in and benefit from their services.

    Sad to say, gentle reader, the party may well be over — the TEA Party that is.

    Yes, according to an item sent out by the McClatchy Newspapers wire service, a ... “report from the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press released Tuesday [last] showed support for the tea party dropping nationwide, with more Americans viewing the movement unfavorably. The view of the Republican Party in the 60 districts represented by members of the House Tea Party Caucus has also suffered.”

  • Be careful what you feed your dog; this one nearly died

    I live in Kingston and want to make pet owners aware of potential dangers of feeding their pets chicken treats. Some of them are made in China and have unknown contaminants in them.

    I have a toy Pomeranian and thought chicken jerky would be as good as it gets for a treat. My little girl nearly died.

    She was almost in renal failure before I realized anything was wrong.

    She has to have a special diet for her kidneys now and takes a tablet a day to prevent liver damage.

  • TennCare fraud ought to be dealt with severely

    If we have a judge who is doing wrong things and gets put in prison for his wrongdoings, then why is it we still have regulars on the street who continually do things wrong and continually get by with these wrongdoings?

    What are these people teaching their own children?

    There are people out there committing TennCare fraud and getting a so-called slap on the wrist.

    They are teaching their children it is OK to do things wrong, and then their children end up committing harmful things to the community.

  • Oh my! Could Ol’ Curmudgeon be of Democrat ilk?

    I think that Roane County News columnist Gerald Largen is a Democrat.

    I refer to his rantings of Oct. 21: His description of the GOP is right in line with current “us vs. them” language coming from the White House.

    I believe the actions of Curry Todd is a slap in the face of law-abiding gun owners, and I strongly urge the state to pull his license for at least five years on top of any other actions against him.

    Although I agree with photo ID voting, it seems the system broke down somewhere between passing and enforcement.

  • Yager donated the proceeds of silent auction to charity

    On Nov. 18, state Sen. Ken Yager hosted his annual chili supper and silent auction at Roane State Community College.

    Yager had contacted the staff at the Roane County United Way several weeks prior to the event and notified us that he would like to donate the proceeds of this year’s silent auction to the United Way.  

    Yager, his staff and other volunteers spent a great deal of time soliciting gifts from businesses around his district to be entered into the silent auction.

  • Adopt a pet for Christmas, but be responsible, too

    Christmas is coming.

    Parents will want to surprise their little ones with puppies and kittens. Just keep in mind the responsibilities that go along with pet ownership.

    There will be teeth marks on furniture, spots on the rugs, money for pet supplies and pet medications (not cheap).
    If you purchase a pet, keep in mind they like to be around people and to run and play, not be tied to a tree or a dog house with no interaction with the family or others.

    When they run loose, they run in front of cars and put themselves and people in danger.

  • No apologies owed to Pakistan for shooting back

    I was very sad to hear a college professor say that we shouldn’t send care-packages to our troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, because they were “killers.”

    While I respect his right to free speech I totally disagree with what he said!

    Many of the brave men and women serving there are reservists and national guardsmen who would prefer to be at home with their families.

  • Thanks to those who spent holiday helping after fire

    Thanksgiving is celebrated as the time of year to enjoy in festive meals along side of family members and friends and give thanks for our many blessings.

    This year, Thanksgiving Day offered generosity and thankfulness to the residents of Harriman Gardens, the location of the serious fire just days prior to Thanksgiving Day.

    My family and I would like to thank everyone who contributed and those who gave up their Thanksgiving Day, normally enjoyed with family, to help the residents of Harriman Gardens have a great Thanksgiving Day dinner.
