  • Disservice to city of Rockwood, readers by using draft audit

    Over the 22 years I have served the city of Rockwood, it has been my practice to provide as accurate as possible information to the Roane County News and always refrained from making statements that lack full truth or cast a negative reflection on our city and its people.

    A recent article did both; it made a couple of our employees look bad and alleged findings our council has not yet dealt with or approved.

    Auditors have been working with the city of Rockwood since completing their part of the city audit in late May.

  • A Roane County teacher remembers sharing 9/11

    As a former educator of Roane County with 30-plus years of experience, I am now six years into my retirement.

    I have many memories as a fifth-grade teacher at Midtown Elementary, but Sept. 11, 2001, is the most powerful.

    Having just lost our son Josh, 29 years old, to a drug overdose caused me to feel very vulnerable and at a loss.

    It was a Tuesday.

    I had bus duty starting at 7:45 a.m. As I greeted students exiting buses and cars, I thought, “What a beautiful blue sky day ahead!” (Not a cloud to be seen.)

  • It’s important to note when we get something right

    It’s been a great summer here in Rockwood ... hot, but great.

    My daughter Sophie and I visited our Rockwood Library each week for their Summer Reading Program. 

    This year’s theme was “One World, Many Stories.” 

    Library staffers Margaret and Judy and their crew hosted approximately 75 children throughout the summer for stories, crafts and general fun. 

    They kicked off their pre-school Story Time (free and worthwhile) on Sept. 7 at 10:30 a.m.

  • Who is misleading whom, writer asks of the Tea Party

    The letters from Tea Partiers Gary Johnston and Linda Wimberley are fine examples of why the American public now thinks more highly of Muslims and atheists than they do of the Tea Party.

    Linda’s defense of Gary’s union hypocrisy was a staggering example of intentionally missing Gerald Largen’s point and misrepresenting him in order to deliver a personal attack.

    If you have to lie to make your case, you have no case.

    Say what you will of Gerald opinions, his facts are facts.

  • Tea Party violence — or was it? The debate continues

    I submit this letter in response to a recent Roane County News item headlined Truth and opinion in letters from readers, an Opinion page Nuts and Bolts column by editor Terri Likens.
    The article sought to explain the reasons for editing letters submitted to the Roane County News.
    One condition to edit would be if the editorial staff had knowledge that any particular statement submitted was false. Any false statement would be edited out.

  • Rockwood library reading program is a big success

    The Rockwood Public Library’s 2011 Summer Reading Programs, “One World, Many Stories” and “You Are Here” concluded on July 20 with great success. 
    We would like to thank all the children and teens who came and participated in our programs. 
    We would also like to thank all the special individuals and organizations that made appearances at the library.
    They are as follows:  Magician Bruce Amato; storytellers Elizabeth Rose, Mark and  Sherry Finchum; and the American Museum of Science and Energy.

  • Some complaints about experience with ETHRA

    On Aug. 8, I had a bad experience with an ETHRA driver.
    It started at 7:30 a.m. I know I’m not their only pick-up — four others go to Knoxville. You see, all my doctors except one are in Knox County.
    I was early and had to wait. You see, my appointment was at 10:15.
    After calling a second time, I was told the van would be there in 30 minutes. That turned to one hour, so I waited an hour and a half for pick-up.
    The driver seemed to hit every pothole he saw on purpose.

  • Rockwood flowers cheery against hot, dry summer

    I would like to express how beautiful and well-kept the flowers are by the railroad tracks on Rockwood Street in Rockwood.
    I do not know who planted or maintains them, but they are eye-catching each time you approach the railroad crossing.
    It takes a lot of work and water to keep those flowers looking so good in this summer heat.
    Thanks again to the people who do such a good job on these flowers and the small corner park on the other side of the tracks.

  • Retired teachers group says, ‘Oh, what a year!’

    The members of Roane County Retired Teachers Association have just completed a very successful program year of service to the community, contributing over 8,000 volunteer hours to various organizations. 
    We are retired, but not from life!
    Our meetings were very enjoyable due to all those who helped us.

  • Prayer can heal the damaged aura of people’s souls

    In the eastern part of Oklahoma, an advertising paper is available to us.
    In the recent publication was the article about the high school principal in your area (who in the early 2000s) defended the right for prayer to be stated by individuals who believe in the power of prayer.
    I wish to say thanks to this high school principal and the people who were at that particular sports event.
    We need more people to be brave enough to stand — united, to express our voice, in all that we believe to be legal, correct and the proper way to be.
