  • Fundraiser beat storm for writing scholarships

    East Tennessee celebrities stepped up to the plate and hit home runs at the recent fundraiser for the Roane County Student Writing Contest Awards Program.
    Bill Landry, actor, author, and TV host of “The Heartland Series;” humorist and author Judy DiGregorio; and educator and storyteller Elizabeth Rose — backed up by the renowned Notchy Creek Bluegrass Band — entertained for three hours.

  • Contractor leaves mess, AT&T and state don’t care

    In this previous winter/spring, AT&T contracted with an outfit to bury some fiber-optic communications line down Hwy. 304 (River Road), seeding most of the raw land when they were finished. 
    They failed to seed most of the raw land they left from Luminary Methodist Church and south from there, including right-of-way and landowners’ property. 
    Apparently they ran out of seed, and just tossed straw on top.  Nothing grew for awhile, then weeds took over. 
    A great deal of that land is still raw looking.

  • Courage, kindness shown by many in wake of church fire

    This letter is written to express my heartfelt thanks and appreciation for those who help to make Kingston in Roane County such a great place to live.
    This is a wonderful community with caring people.  In recent months, I have witnessed a wonderful spirit of compassion and concern from our neighbors.

  • Largen misleading on Cut, Cap & Balance column

    Correcting all of the misleading and blatantly false assertions in Gerald Largen’s columns would be a full-time job, so I usually just avoid reading them.
     Friday’s was so outrageous that I am compelled to respond to his attack on the Cut, Cap and Balance plan. 
    The original framers of the Constitution had studied history and the nature of man.

  • Roane County: Great amenities, wonderful people

    Over the past Fourth of July weekend, my family from out-of-town took in the beauty of Roane County in more than a visual appreciation of the offerings Roane County extends. 
    Roane County Park’s splash pad was a terrific place to enjoy young children in the safe recreational environment  while providing lake swimming, $5 paddle boat rentals and viewing of the watercraft traveling along the river, all in a very well maintained park.

  • Commandments guide morality, absolutes exist

    Charles Haynes, in his Guest Opinion in the July 6 edition of the Roane County News, ended with, “But with New York as a model, we can acknowledge both gay equality and religious liberty as basic human rights.”
    Our Constitution recognizes religious liberty not just because “the multiplicity of sects in the new nation left us little alternative.”

  • Congress should compromise to live like we do

    How did we become a nation of people who blame anyone and every one for all of our problems?
    It’s the fast-food industry’s fault that my child is overweight, it’s the school system’s fault my child can’t read and write, it’s my father’s fault I’m not wealthy, my government has failed me. The list goes on and on.
    It’s high time we stop blaming others for our problems and start looking for ways to resolve them for ourselves.

  • Solving Beard’s case an excellent birthday gift

    Happy birthday, Karen.

    Friday, July 1, was our daughter’s 56th birthday. But we did not celebrate it with her.

    Her name is Karen Farmer Beard, and she was abducted and murdered in Kingston on Jan. 15, 1991.

    Some of the individuals who are responsible for this hideous crime are still walking the streets of Roane County. The sheriff tells us that the case is still open and under a “cold case” investigation by detective Steven White.

  • Kudos to Hurley for service to the people of county

    I would like to take this opportunity to thank state Rep. Julia Hurley for her service to the people she represents.

    One of the most important traits of a legislative representative of the people is the willingness to listen to the people they represent. I have found Rep. Hurley to be a person who listens and considers the perspectives and concerns of all people, regardless of where they stand on any particular issue.
