  • REU crews were quick, courteous during outage

Thanks to Rockwood Electric Utility work crews!

The power went out in the early hours on Friday morning and the temperature in the house dropped to the low 60s.

My call to REU brought an immediate phone response from one of the workers, who reported a line was down, but they were already working on it.

Although the outside temperature was below freezing and the wind was vicious, these guys were on the job — as always.

  • Too much whining about redistricting from other side

Blame it on Pelosi, Reid and Obama.

After the actions of the Washington, D.C., gang, in 2010 a longterm state legislator and a U.S. congressman, both Democrats,  were replaced by Republicans.

No one locally in the past 10 years complained that Lenoir City was represented by a Democrat who didn’t live in Loudon County.

Democrats didn’t care what Lenoir City wanted.

  • President and Congress need to learn cooperation

    9-9-9; 9-0-9; flat; tax-the-rich; don’t tax anybody; tax Wall Streeters; tax-everybody-equally — everything but a thumb tax!

Are you sick of it all, too?

Is this too much ado about nothing, or is this a real problem?

And, of course, everyone has an opinion on this subject because it affects us all directly.

  • Tea Party criticism unfair — look at what others do

Roane County News columnist Gerald Largen made references to the Tea Party being “ranters and haters” and the group being on the decline.

A gentle reader might ask if he has attended a Tea Party rally, but we know that answer. He tries to associate this group with the John Birchers who no one has heard much of in many years.

If Largen wants “ranting and hating,” look at the union rally for President Obama urging members to “get those SOBs!” And the news media gave them a pass on it.

  • School board should choose local as director

I wish to give one piece of advice to the Roane County Board of Education as members begin the search for a new superintendent.

    Stay home.

By that, I mean there must be an experienced educator already within the system who has been loyal to the profession as well as the position as an employee of the Roane County School System.

The right one may even be a person who is not seeking the position.

Oddly enough, that might be just the type of person who would be best for the office at this time.

  • Fact-checking should be done on election claims

We are fast approaching the political silly season of candidates trying to convince us to give them our vote and place them at the levers of political power.

These candidates are always supported by like minded-political operatives and commentators that will try any tactic to cajole or frighten you into supporting their benefactor.

For as long as I have been politically aware, there has been a consistent issue that one partisan group employs to frighten a certain demographic segment of our communities, usually to great success.

  • Who pays for TVA lawsuit damages? You get one guess

I’d like to comment on the Dec. 21 newspaper article concerning new lawsuits against TVA for the ash spill.
I thought it was pretty well established that property values actually increased, some more than 100 percent, after the spill, according to our state and local officials.
It was also said sales were good on 2009. The TV airways are absolutely bombarded with commercials urging viewers to hire “them” to get “them” what “they” “deserve.”
Some commercials even have heavenly music in the background.

  • Attack on Obama not just politics as usual, writer says

I wonder what someone has slipped into the Tea Party’s namesake drink that caused the co-chair of that august though neophyte party in Roane County to pen the vitriolic letter to the editor that appeared in the Roane County News on Dec. 28.
    In that opinion piece, he asserts the following;
    1. President Obama blames capitalism for the poor performance of the economy.
    2. Obama has assaulted capitalism for three years.
    3. Obama ignores the rule of law, the Constitution and Congress

  • Another takes issue with recent Tea Party letter

President Obama is the title he holds and deserves to be addressed as, not agitator or dictator.
The United States went through, very painfully I may add, eight years of Republican “bliss!”
President Obama walked into and accepted with dignity and honor this horrible job that was left to him by a Republican president.
Yet, you choose to condemn his efforts... why?
The Democratic party is not responsible for this tragedy from the previous eight years.

  • Christmas spirit alive and well in Rockwood, Roane

As a pastor, I believe in publicly acknowledging acts of kindness. This especially must be done when those random acts of kindness come in a cluster.
