  • Federal income tax simplification much needed

    As taxpayers we will spend millions of hours and hundreds of millions of dollars again this year in an attempt to determine how much we each need to pay in federal income tax.
    The tax code continually gets more difficult to understand, yet we are forced to use it.
    This angers me.
    It is a sad commentary when the average American taxpayer thinks the amount he or she must pay or the size of their refund depends on who prepares their tax return.
    With tens of thousands of pages of complex wordings, phrases and situations is it any wonder?

  • Honky-tonk? Not so much. Family fun? For sure

    The article about the Riverfront Band in last week’s Roane County News described it as a “honky tonk” band.
    I’d like to clarify that.
    The band plays country-western music in a family atmosphere, with no drinking or smoking allowed.
    We have mostly family, senior citizens, children and teenagers.
    The main object is exercise, fellowship and to have lots of fun.

  • Dunn Center benefits from silent auction

    On Friday, Jan. 7, state Sen. Ken Yager hosted his annual chili supper and silent auction at the Kingston Community Center.
    Sen. Yager had contacted the staff at Michael Dunn Center a few weeks prior to the event and notified us that he would like to donate the proceeds of the silent auction to the Michael Dunn Foundation.
    He and his staff spent a great deal of time soliciting gifts from businesses around his district to be entered into a silent auction.
    An estimated 400 people participated in the event.

  • Country is broke and only Repubs can fix it

    Columnist Gerald Largen believes that America is not broke.
    Has he seen the U.S. debt clock which has just surpassed $14 trillion? Our spending, especially on government programs, has got to be cut.
    Largen used several illustrations to indicate that if America is so wealthy, it can afford to pay for government services and programs.
    America’s wealth is in its people and private enterprise, not in government spending programs.

  • Kingston salon wreck victim offers thanks

    I am one of the women injured when a van crashed into a Kingston beauty salon on Aug. 24, 2010.
    First, I want to thank God for letting me live. There were days when my family was told I might not make it through the night, but God had other plans.
    I would like to thank my husband, Bob, and my sons, for taking great care of me when I got home from the hospital. I love you more than I can say.
    Thanks to the classes of ’64 and ’65. Thanks for your prayers, visits and cards. Thank you so much for your gift. God bless you all.

  • ‘New Right’ knows exactly what it seeks

    In response to Gerald Largen’s column of Jan. 7 regarding a mandate within the Obama health care bill, I say welcome aboard. I am proud of the liberal “old curmudgeon’s” conclusion that our government forcing anyone to buy anything is unconstitutional.
    However, as one of the “slow-on-the-uptake” crowd, as he put it, I think seeking legal remedy for this unconstitutional portion of the bill is exactly correct. We are fully aware of what we ask for.

  • Must we shoot every creature that takes wing?

    “Save the neck for me, Clark,” Cousin Eddie requests of his host, Clark Griswald, in the movie “Christmas Vacation.”
    Christmas dinner at the Griswalds’ could change drastically if TWRA issues the 733 hunting permits for the regal birds which are supposed to be “good table fare” according to the executive director of the Tennessee Wildlife Federation.
    Cousin Eddie would need a plate at least 2 feet across to accommodate this tall bird’s neck. Drumsticks would require equal space.

  • Salvation Army’s bell-ringing helps ease hard times

    The Salvation Army wishes to thank the citizens of Roane and Morgan County for making this year’s kettle drive a success.
    Through our local Red Kettle sites and our bell ringers’ efforts, we raised $24,971.90.
    With our uncertain economy, this will go a long way toward meeting the needs of our community this coming year.
    We are indebted to Food City in Harriman and Kingston, Kroger and Walmart in Roane County and Darnell’s Food Market, Family Dollar and Sav-A-Lot in Morgan County for letting us locate our kettles at their stores.

  • Another landlord story that came to a bad end

    I was reading the letters to the editor secton and was appalled to learn of the family that was evicted because of their noisy young child.  
    It seems that there are more and more horror stories of landlords.  Ours, too, is one of those.  The week before Christmas, we were informed that our landlord had no intentions of repairing anything in our home.

  • Thanks to Largen for his brilliant column on tariffs

    I just wanted to let you know that the column you ran Friday on Page 4 by Gerald Largen with the heading — U.S.A. needs a new tariff to solve problems — was brilliant. I copied it and passed it on to my friends and neighbors who gave me the same response.
    I wish there was a way for this article to be run in every press in the USA and a copy givin to all our polititions and a copy laid on President Obama’s desk.
    Please give Mr. Largen our thanks on his fantastic article and tell him to keep ’em coming.
