  • Family member ‘went home to be with the Lord’

    I am writing in regard to my dad’s passing on Dec. 14.
    It was a hard time for my family and when writing the obituary to put in the Roane County News, my mom had requested that “went home to be with the Lord” be put in the article instead of “died” or “passed away.”
    You would think after paying in the excess of $50, you would be able to get this printed, but as it states in the newspaper policy, the paper reserves the right to edit the article and, yes, they did.

  • Rockwood Christmas Home Tour a success

    The 20th annual Rockwood Christmas Home Tour was a great success.
    Rockwood 2000 would like to thank the people who made it happen.

  • School snow day situation makes writer see red

    Can someone please tell me why Roane County is always the last to be called off from school on snow days? 
    It has been this way when I was little and my child was  little, and now it is this way for my grandchilden.
    All the schools around us can be closed and Tennessee Department of Transportation says stay off the road.
    Well, I get out and go to work, anyway, but don’t put our kids in danger.
    And if we do not send them, then they are in trouble.
    To me, no, the school system does not care for the safety of our kids.

  • Amused? Well, that’s one way of putting it

    I was quite amused when I read Commissioner Ron Berry’s quote saying that Roane County’s slow growth was due to the economy.
    If that were the case, then all of the other counties would have had slow growth, too.
    Instead, eight of 11 had two to six times the growth of Roane County.
    Could our slow growth have been due to:
    1) The ash spill?
    2) The run-down, unappealing downtown areas of Kingston, Harriman and Rockwood?
    3) The availability of only a handful of good restaurants?
    4) The lack of good shopping?

  • Here’s a gift that could be enjoyed by community

    After many years of discussion, planning and hope, the first phase of the Kingston Public Library’s renovation and expansion project is under way.
    Our first step in the $150,000 renovation program is to remodel the Truman D. Anderson Discovery Center and Meeting Room.
    As many of you already know, the library has received a $19,000 grant to place a state-of-the-art computer lab at the library.
    This lab will enable us to offer computer training and other vital programs to our patrons and community.

  • Granddaughter separated from family kept safe

    I would like to thank the ladies who came to the aid of my granddaughter at the Rockwood Christmas Parade.
    You held her in your arms and kept her safe until we found her.

  • Overspending can sabotage benefit of any tax cuts

    Internal Revenue Service records show increases in tax revenues for every year of the Reagan administration.
    More money was collected after the tax cuts, and the rich actually paid more total taxes and a higher percentage of all taxes.
    So why did the deficit increase?
    The simple answer is more money was spent than collected, even with increased revenues.
    Other tax cuts have produced the same results, but overspending can sabotage the benefits of tax cuts.

  • HUB’s show of respect will never be forgotten

    On a recent Wednesday, around 10 a.m., I witnessed a truly remarkable sight — the B.D. Cochran funeral procession.
    As we passed the Harriman Utility Board office on Roane Street, about 20 or so staff were standing at attention in the cold winds along the sidewalk.
    This sight alone was an inspiration for the family as we passed by, but as we topped the hill by the Sexton dealership, our already wet eyes and heavy hearts were captivated by the heavy equipment line trucks with  their white booms raised in a crossed configuration for us to drive under.

  • Largen taken on about climate change, billboards

    On Aug. 13 of this year, Gerald Largen wrote, “Here at home, the predominant feature is the unrelenting heat, with every day seeing 90 degrees and more.”
    I will have to agree with my friend, Gerald Largen, concerning the summer heat, but in June, July and August, we only had 63 days of 90-and-plus temps, according to the Knoxville weather station.
    This could be plus or minus 1 degree depending on different locations in this area.

  • Some clergy’s response to Masons offensive

    I’m writing this letter in response to a few local clergy who believe that there is something wrong with Masons.
    We are not plotting to take over the government, and we are definitely not devil worshippers.
    We are a fraternal organization, and we do a lot of good work in our community.
    You should know that you have to be a Mason before you can be a Shriner.
    I don’t know any one who is against free health care for children who have been burned or have other physical disabilities.
