  • Volunteer officers could make schools more safe

    When I was young things were a lot more different.
    If you lived less than two miles from your school, you couldn’t ride the bus, you had to walk.
    There were crossing guards at every intersection within a few blocks of our school. Most of were retired policemen who worked part time, protecting the children who had to walk to school.
    I was one of those unfortunate children who happened to live 1.9 miles from Lime Street Elementary School.

  • More guns carried means attacks less likely

    Amid Connecticut shootings’ chaos, heroic adults died to save children. 
    The nation needs to wake up, realize that once more we’ve been sneak-attacked, and seize the attitude and material to prevent such future disasters.
    Attitude: Mass killers appear anywhere and stop when killed themselves.
    Material: Firearms drawn and triggered with quickness and accuracy practice develops.

  • Banning guns? Take away rocks sticks, bats, too

    Once again the call for gun control goes out.

    Arguably one aim of gun control is to make guns and thus killers less efficient.

    For instance, limit magazine capacity to make killers reload and hopefully slow the body count.

    Better yet, take away guns entirely and no one will be killed by guns (at least not until a cop goes nuts). 

Problem solved — no more murders, no more suicides, no more accidental shootings.

  • Morgan needs to apologize — and grow up, too

    This morning I have been sitting up thinking and unable to sleep because I  wanted to get this off of my chest.

    I am a regular subscriber to the Roane County News and have been for years.

    I have read articles on everything from the scandalized judges to starving babies and puppy  mills.

    Now all I have been seeing in the paper is the bashing of my good friend Teresa Kirkham, former property assessor of Roane County.

    I believe David Morgan won his seat as property assessor due to the help of his financial backers.

  • Grateful for Hurricane Sandy relief help

    I want to thank you for the coverage you gave to the relief effort for the Hurricane Sandy victims in the northeast.

    I also want to thank our churches and entire community for the wonderful response in loading the trailer with so many helpful, useful items.

    Landmark Truck Leasing in Knoxville donated the use of the trailer and Remote Area Medical Ministry also in Knoxville donated their tractor and fuel to haul the trailer to Union Beach, New Jersey where your gifts are already in the hands of the people who need them.

  • Bowers food drive success due to donors

    Every year, the staff and students at Bowers Elementary School sponsors a Thanksgiving food drive designed to provide our school families with much-needed food items for holiday meals.

    This year was a huge success as we provided baskets to over 90 families.

    These baskets included turkey, rolls, potatoes and many other canned food items.

    For many families in our community, holidays are very stressful times.

    We are confident that our food drive made Thanksgiving a holiday to remember.

  • The politicians get prettier at closing time?

    Ever hear the old saying that was incorporated into a country song that says the girls all look better at closin’ time? It reminds me of the slow dance Boehner and Obama are doing as they dance ever closer to the looming fiscal cliff.

    Claiming stalemate, both dancers shuffle to the steady rhythm of the talking heads on both extreme wings of the political parties.

  • Chili supper helps feed more than attendees

    On Nov. 16, state Sen. Ken Yager held his annual chili supper at Roane State Community College.
    Every year at the chili supper, Yager holds a silent auction.

    Many local venders are asked to donate an item for auction. The proceeds are then donated to a local charity that serves Roane County.

    This year the charity was Hands of Mercy Enterprises in Kingston. Hands of Mercy is a local food pantry that serves all of Roane County.

    HOME, as called by many of us, is also a referral service, providing case management for many clients who need more than food every month.

  • Berry installed hydrant, saved neighbors’ $$$

    We think when someone goes out of his way to make things better for  others, that action should not go unnoticed.  

    Everyone in our community will   save hundreds of dollars on their annual homeowners insurance premiums and  have better fire protection.

    Our neighbor, Ron Berry, had a fire hydrant installed on our road, (Emerald Cove Lane) and bore the entire expense of  $2,800 out of his own pocket.  

    We want to thank him, acknowledge his efforts and applaud his generosity.

  • Phone call – it’s for you, County Atty. Tom McFarland

    How does one get a return telephone call from the County Attorney Tom McFarland?
    I have called his office from Nov. 26 to Nov. 30, (5 days) and left a message for him to please call me.
    As of Dec. 4 I still haven’t received a return telephone call.
