Today's Opinions

  • Comments in column wrong and offensive

I would like to make a rebuttal to last Fridays “Going with the Flo” columnist’s comments. Not only are they wrong, they are offensive!

    She wrote:

    1. “Liberals see no connection between values, education, the moral health of our nation and America’s security and prosperity.”

    2. “They train our young to criticize America, not celebrate it.”

    3. “They ban ... the Ten Commandments, but encourage ... the teachings of the Koran.”

  • GOING with the FLO: Leaky lessons can be learned from our history

    By FLO CHARLES

If we are to survive, we must restore the true vision of faith and freedom where God is sovereign again.

George Washington said that “the propitious smiles of heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right, which heaven itself has ordained. We must restore religious liberties in our land or we can be assured that the smiles of heaven will soon turn to wrath.”

  • A VIEW from LICK SKILLET: We share some memories, but some we don’t

Sympathetic reader, although she was allotted a full score more than the scriptural three score and ten years, it still seems that four score and ten years was not enough time for us to have the privilege that came with knowing Polly Burnette, for her time was always devoted to serving others and bringing happiness to all those with whom she came into contact.

  • Nall’s views made sense; future of our county is at stake

Thank you for your wisdom in printing Earl Nall’s message in the Roane County News. Yes, it was quite long, BUT it makes more sense than anything else I have read about school consolidation.

Whatever we name them, it would certainly help the future of our county. Yes, our taxes will go up, but at least it will be for a good reason.

  • Thanks for helping Harriman Lions help community

The pancake lovers in the county once again united to make the “World’s Greatest Pancake Breakfast” a great success. The Harriman Lions Club hosted this event on May 6 at the Roane Street Grill in Harriman.

This is our annual major fundraiser for the programs which we sponsor and support. Our funds go back into the community. We provide photo eye screening each year for more than 400 Roane County children. We pay for eye examinations and/or glasses for 30-40 people yearly. We also contribute to local charities as the need arises.

  • One person does not decide who is, isn’t American

Well, Gerald Largen has shown that he is a true liberal in his column on July 14.

He has decided that Raul Lopez is not an American. While liberals like Mr. Largen will give the title to almost anyone such as African American, Asia American — the list goes on and is very long — but Cuban American does not qualify.

And liberals like Gerald Largen will condemn us to for saying someone is not an American based on his vast insight as a liberal can decide who is an American.

  • Kudos for help with successful reading program

Harriman Historic Carnegie Library’s summer reading program, “Build a Better World” was a huge success.

I would like to thank Wendy’s in Harriman for Frosty coupons, the MUSE in Knoxville for free-child-admission-with-paid-adult coupons, Laser Quest in Knoxville for free games of laser tag, the Tennessee Valley Fair for free admittance coupons, Ginger Schubert for a generous monetary donation and Earl Duff Subaru, Harriman, for the tablets, computers, microscopes, DIY robots, crane sets, building blocks, magic sets and pom-pom rug kits and more.

  • GOING with the FLO – Pay attention: Some facts simply cannot be ignored

    By Flo Charles

I must emphasize these important facts that cannot be ignored. We are seeing the effects of Saul Alinskiy’s “Rules for Radicals” more and more.

We must pay attention. They pick a target, freeze it, polarize it and continue to attack it over and over.
