  • GUEST OPINION: Vigorous debate continues on First Amendment

    By GENE POLICINSKI

So, what part of the First Amendment, or the law around it, would you want to change?

For most of us, the answer is an academic exercise at best. For a few legislators, lawyers and litigants, the response is proposed legislation or lengthy briefs and pointed legal arguments.

But when the words involve justices of the U.S. Supreme Court, it is cause for special attention.

  • A VIEW from LICK SKILLET: Lamar Alexander writes for Times Free Press

Gentle reader, as you doubtless recall from our numerous previous references, the Chattanooga Times Free Press has, since the two papers merged, retained separate editorial pages, one for the Times editorial opinions, and the opposite for the Free Press editorial opinions.

On the 15th, the Free Press editorial page ran a guest editorial, or commentary, from our senior U. S. Senator, Lamar Alexander, entitled “What to do about Tax Day.”

  • Robotics team did bang-up job, but sponsors helped

Recently, the Roane County Full Metal Jackets Robotics team successfully competed at the Great Smoky Mountain Regional competition for  FIRST Robotics in Knoxville.

Out of the 50 teams from all over Tennessee and  several nearby states, the Full Metal Jackets were ranked ninth overall and ended as regional semi-finalists.

By every measure, we had a terrific second season, and we are building a solid foundation as an excellent team with a bright future.

  • A little back-seat driving from one reader to another

This is in reference to the letter to the editor written by Norman Campbell of Kingston.

Were you in the left or right lane or on a two-lane road?

If you were in the left lane on a four-lane, you should have pulled into the right lane. Some drivers think that the “slow lane” is the left one.

Unless you are planning to turn left soon, you are in the wrong lane.

Norman, if I am in the wrong, I apologize to you personally.

By the way, there is a thing in all cars called a turn signal ... USE.

  • GUEST OPINION: Attack in Kansas not simply an isolated incident

“I hate all Jews” was Frazier Glenn Miller’s mantra, repeated time and again by the well-known white supremacist at rallies, in publications and on the Internet over a period of many years.

On the eve of Passover, Miller translated his words of hate into violent action by opening fire on a Jewish community center and Jewish retirement home in Overland Park, Kan.

  • OFF the CUFF: Diapers to dreams: Where did the time go?

She appreciates my sense of humor.

She listens to my puns with anewed interest.

And she likes — yes, LIKES! — my singing.

I introduced Roane County News readers to my baby girl with those words the week I returned to work from maternity leave.

Scribbled on a yellow legal pad only hours after Amie was born, those words spilled on and on as I watched my tiny dark-haired creation slumber beside my bed.

I was in awe. She was so small. And my love for her was so enormous.

  • A VIEW from LICK SKILLET: We should broaden our educational horizons

Gentle reader, the current powder keg in Ukraine will, no doubt, in the fullness of time teach many lessons, but one which we doubt we will hear much about, but which could well be the most important in the long run for these United States, bears upon the excuse under which Putin claims the right to over-run and seize his neighbors’ lands.

  • Tailgaters, do me a solid: back off just a little bit

I had by far the worst experience of tailgating in my many years of driving this last Saturday night.

Roane County has more than its share of people who like to ride the bumper of the car in front of them, but this is the worst I’ve been involved with.
