Today's Opinions

  • From the EDITOR’S Desk: Let’s make Kingston great again

Imagine a downtown Kingston where folks travel from near and far to visit historic places and stop at coffee shops and ice cream stores to refresh themselves.

On nice days these visitors could walk by the lake or maybe even rent a sailboat, canoe or kayak for an afternoon cruise before dining in a fine downtown restaurant.

It’s still a dream, but business owners, elected officials and volunteers have been working to make it reality. These visionaries intend to breathe new life into the underdeveloped downtown Kingston.

  • GOING with the FLO: God protects those following Him

In last week’s column I mentioned that God promises to “dispossess nations greater and mightier than we are” if we obey and He will “set us high above all the nations of the earth.”

  • A VIEW from LICK SKILLET: Mega-School invites Mega-Troubles

Well, Gentle Reader: It’s happened again. This time at a high school in Broward County Florida. This atrocious slaughter has provoked, once again, the gun debate, and we could join in on that vital subject, but not today, for today we want to address a much more vital and much more timely aspect of this mass killing, as it relates to our local situation and future prospects.

  • Two opinions differ in reflection of one Bible

It is interesting that both opinions, the one expressed in “Going with the Flo” and “A View from Lick Skillet” made reference to the Bible on Feb. 16.

Gerald Largen made clear that, “Divine right of Kings” is no longer credible. It is true that we read in the Bible, “I remove kings, and raise up kings.” We also read, “They have set up kings, but not by Me.” (Daniel 2:21, Hosea 8:4) The Lord lets us go our own way, and the way we choose disciplines us.

  • GLIMPSES from a Teacher Historian: We, too, will survive our times

    By MARK BANKER

Tragically, a bad week for our nation might be a good week for an opinion columnist.

Surely with yet another tragic school shooting, alleged incontrovertible proof of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, and yet another showdown between right-wing extremists and their critics in Knoxville, any writer worth his laptop can reflect and compose a relevant column.

  • Securing schools a priority for this country’s future

I join all members of our society in the feelings of deep pain and horror that happened on Valentine’s Day at the school in Parkland, Fla.

I can’t begin to fathom the emotions of any of those involved.

We must face the reality that our world has changed drastically from the times that I grew up in the ’50s and ’60s. Those times are gone, and I see no indication of society returning to the innocence of those days.

  • Another applicant believed more qualified for shelter

I felt this needed to be brought to the attention of everyone in Roane County. Our county executive told me personally that it was his choice only to hire the Roane County Animal Shelter director. He put that choice into effect Monday night, Feb. 12.

I know personally an applicant who submitted his application in December 2017 for this job.

This applicant is more qualified and experienced than the county executive’s choice.

    Sincerely,

    Nancy Quarles

  • GOING with the FLO: Eliminating God’s word ends nation He protects

We have endured hysterical talking points from those few in the top levels of the FBI who took an unverified and salacious dossier to secret court to get a secret warrant to spy on a fellow American without telling the court who paid for it and the political ramifications.
