  • Change in obituary wording upsetting to this writer

    I am writing in regard to the letter to the editor in Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, edition titled “Family member ‘went home to be with the Lord.”
    This brought back the disappointment I felt when the Roane County News took the Lord out of the obituary I wrote for my husband’s passing on July 19, 2010.
    Instead of “went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ,” it was replaced with, “passed away.”
    The Lord is being taken out of more and more things these days, I don’t understand why.
    Also, there were 10 survivors listed in the obituary, all from Roane County.

  • University wise to rethink open records policy

    Let’s begin 2011 on a hopeful note: Texas A&M University officials say they will revisit a recent decision that would have banned journalism instructors from directing students in filing open-records requests about — of all things — Texas A&M policies and practices.
    At Tarleton State University, one of 19 Texas schools and agencies in the A&M state system, journalism instructors have for years taught their students how to file such requests.
    Not surprisingly, Tarleton State students have done that very thing.

    We’ve crossed into another new year and I pray the next 360 or so days will find each of you and your families blessed beyond belief.
    As with most of you, I choose to look forward to the promise of the “new.”
    I also cherish memories and tend to think back on lessons learned.
    A story in last Wednesday’s Roane County News made me realize we can all share in the best of both worlds.
    “Channel 15, Harriman’s new government access channel, has the capabilities to put on quite a production.”

  • Thanks to the Rockwood public library folks

    I would just like to send a quick note to you and community to let you know how much I appreciate the hard workers at the Rockwood Public Library. 
    Every time I go there, I am amazed by how clean and organized everything is.  There is never anything out of place, and the ladies who work there are truly superb. 
    I have been to other libraries in Roane County, and I can say that Rockwood’s is probably the most friendly and helpful. 
    They have a nice selection of books, audio books, CDs, and DVDs which I check out frequently.

  • Land donation a substantial gift to Roane

    Some Roane County News readers love Gerald Largen’s column, A View from Lick Skillet.
    Others clearly love to hate it.
    Whatever anyone thinks of Largen’s opinions, any Roane County resident has to appreciate his recent deeds.
    Largen has taken steps to donate his more than 100 acres of rural land on Watts Bar Lake and Bowman Bend Road to the state for public use.

  • LOOSELEAF LAUREATE: May we ring in another great year together

    New Year’s Eve, 1999.

    It was an uncertain time in my life, and not just because of the looming new millennium.

    I had left Chicago and was transitioning out of a two-year freelance stint that hadn’t lived up to my expectations. Now I was tying up those lose ends and holding a temp job in the law firm of a large electric utility.

    As I sat around the TV with my brothers on that long-ago New Year’s Eve, my edginess wasn’t just over whether planes might fall out of the sky.

  • This sad chapter should be a lesson to us all

    That TDEC is requiring the TVA to install a liner in the gypsum storage pond is no surprise.   
    That there are problems with the pond is, sadly, unremarkable.
    As far back as Jan. 2, 2009, at the special-called Kingston City Council meeting when TVA Chairman Tom Kilgore addressed the public regarding the TVA ash spill, former Kingston councilman Jim Rivers raised the issue of the gypsum pond construction.
    Mr. Rivers expressed concern that the pond was not being built with a liner (as TDEC is now requiring the TVA to retrofit).
