  • Officials in Rockwood need to step it up

    We are deeply disappointed with some Rockwood officials in their handling of water department issues.
    Weeks after the Roane County News wrote about the existence of a letter from a state official telling the city it has been illegally mingling funds between the water and gas utilities, many of these officials have been burying their heads in the sand.
    We don’t have that letter, some city officals said. Then some of them, including utility director Rod King, seemed to want to continue to ignore its existence.

  • LOOSELEAF LAUREATE: Life has disappointments, even in good times

    It was my father’s big day, his retirement from a long, successful career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the whole family was there for it.

    The whole family except for me.

    I was working for The Associated Press in Chicago at the time, and Dad’s retirement gala happened to coincide with a critical election in the Windy City. The AP news staff was told that under no circumstances were we to request time off that day, and so I dared not.

  • IMPRESSIONS: Groan ... sometimes Teglas humor tough to bear

    I’m no big game hunter.

    Friends will tell you the most shooting I’ve ever done is with a camera.

    I can honestly lay claim to fame for getting a big deer.

    I got my one and only six-pointer on Memorial Day weekend in 2005.

    As not to embellish (and to keep myself out of a TWRA inquisition on why I was hunting out of season), I will come clean and remind you that the buck picked me out and chose to commit suicide on the front end of my old green Jeep Cherokee.

  • Property values raised after man appeals to board

    In view of the apparent public interest in property appraisals, I thought it prudent to report my experience in this fiasco.

    Like so many others in the county, I had serious doubts about the exorbitant increase in my appraisal.

    As a result, I chose to appeal to the Equalization Board. Twenty-nine days later I received, from the Appraiser’s Office, a second notice of reappraisal, increasing my appraised value by $4,800.

  • Swan Pond will be made right -- when pigs fly!

    I feel a great deal of empathy for the residents of Swan Pond, who had their lives turned upside down from the ash spill.

    The recent letter from a resident, Sarah McCoin, prompted me to write.

    I agree that it would be a dream come true to have TVA return your area to what it once was, or make it even better. But sadly, TVA does not work that way.

    The money that could have been used to help Swan Pond residents is being wasted on projects TVA considers far more important.

  • Humane Society fundraiser had many helpers

    We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported us during the recent Roane County Humane Society spaghetti supper.

    Thanks to you, we raised money to help rescue, foster and care for some of Roane County’s unwanted pets that otherwise would have been euthanized.

  • Protectors of history deserve help, support

    We are pleased to see that Chancellor Frank V. Williams III is the guest of honor at the Roane County Heritage Commission’s gala to help fund needed repairs at the Old Roane County Courthouse.

    Williams and the group of other residents who rallied to save the old building from demolition a few decades ago deserve more credit than they are ever likely to receive.

    Not only is the old courthouse of architectural importance, but it also, as the storehouse of important records from the past, is a treasure trove linking us to those who came before.
