  • GUEST OPINION: College should respect right to put out fliers

    A student at Des Moines Area Community College is challenging the school’s limits on leafleting on First Amendment grounds.

    Jacob Dagel has filed a lawsuit in federal court contending that the school’s restrictions on distributing fliers violates his free speech rights, according to the Des Moines Register.

    The college requires a 10-day notice and limits distribution of leaflets to a single hallway in the student services center.

  • Interest in potential sale of TVA ‘amazing’

    In the years of writing about the TVA, I have never seen such interest, pro or con, in the possible sale of TVA.

    From Bangor to San Francisco to Paris (Tennessee) and London, there are articles written about Obama’s view of selling what once was a sacred Democratic pearl.

    TVA, a vestige of FDR’s New Deal, has existed and has been challenged for 80 years.

    Defending TVA has cost ratepayers millions in legal defenses; billions in wasted or misspent ratepayer dollars that are down the drain.

  • Thanks ... and new bell ringer meetings TBA

    To those who gave of their time and effort to serve as volunteer bell ringers, the Salvation Army of Roane and Morgan Counties Service Unit Committee wishes to publicly express its gratitude and appreciation.

    Such noble service deserves public recognition and a heartfelt thank you.

    Announcement of the bell ringers organizing meeting for the upcoming holiday season will be made later this year.

  • Let’s hire this superhero and buy him a suit

    The April 10 edition of the Roane County News printed a letter from Denzil Britt in which he voiced his opinions regarding several topics, the main one of which was school safety and the possibility of a large property tax increase to hire security officers.

    Mr. Britt suggested that replacing female teachers with armed male school teachers and privatizing school security would solve the problem.

  • GUEST OPINION: NC proposal does not protect religious liberty

    Here’s a quick primer on a recent proposal by two North Carolina legislators to permit the state to designate a state religion:
    First, the North Carolina Speaker of the House effectively killed the proposal one day after it was filed, saying it “will not advance” to a committee hearing.

    Second, even if enacted, it would not survive constitutional scrutiny under existing Supreme Court decisions.

    Some weeks ago, we penned an article captioned “What mischief will legislature produce?”

    Although that august body will not adjourn sine die for some days yet, they have already established a new record for Acts of ignorance, shame, and disgrace that will be hard to equal, but no doubt they will strive to do so just next year.

    Consider, if you will the following efforts, some of which have passed, some which have not yet been acted upon and some of which are lying in abeyance awaiting an opportune time to rear their ugly heads and become public Acts.

  • Good people need guns to keep criminals at bay

    ln response to an article by B.J. Gillum in the March 22 paper, Mr. Gillum seems to think that preserving our Second Amendment rights is much ado about nothing and is worthy of poking fun at, that these people wanting to preserve their constitutional rights are animal-slaughtering, moonshine-drinking, third grade-educated dumb hillbillies who can’t find their way out of bed in the morning.

    What good is your right to remain silent if it’s OK for a cop to beat your brains out until you tell him what he wants to hear?

  • GUEST OPINION: Reporter takes up shield; what will courts do?

    The judge in the Colorado movie theater shooting case has decided to buy some time.

    Colorado District Court Judge Carlos Samour  Jr. has postponed a decision on whether Fox News reporter Jana Winter will be required to reveal her anonymous sources.  

    Winter’s reporting revealed that shooting suspect James Holmes had mailed a notebook outlining  violent plans and depicting illustrations of a shooting attack to a psychiatrist at the University of Colorado, where he had gone to school.
